Massages are a great way to find out whether or not a muscle needs to be strengthened. People complain about hip pain and
"sciatica" all the time, but after massaging the TFL, Glute med, or piriformis, they suddenly have immediate and temporary relief.
If this is the case, then that is a good sign to do some strength work for that specific muscle by training the hips in new ranges of motion.
Some people say that massaging muscles is useless, and in many ways I agree, but I think that it offers a simple way for you to get in touch with how your body feels. I personally don't do a lot of massages anymore because I work all of my joints through full ranges of motion. Doing self massages helped me pinpoint what areas needed more strength/mobility work.
