Balalaika player here - the giant bass ones are really hard to come by (especially in the US) but I was lucky enough to play one, really cool experience. Standard size balalaikas are tuned E E A, so playing the bass version felt more like a normal bass than a balalaika. Still amazing!

I’ve played the contrabass balalaika in a folk band for the best part of 10 years now, my bass teacher is part Russian and taught all his students to play various folk instruments. I love the sound of the contrabass when you use the leather pick Danny spoke about, it’s got so much fullness and power behind it

I have played one for many years in a local ensemble, and it is a perfect crossover between tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. We use old school strings that are so freaking brutal, and the action around the 12th fret is high enough to stick your fingers under. The plectrum is that I use is a leather heal from a shoe. or boot. I will say, the sound is really awesome when it is not compromised by buzzing strings failing to be pressed all the way down under the fatiguing hand of the player. When you have more than one in the section, it can get quite interesting.
