Buying A New Car Is Stupid - DIY Android Auto

New cars are expensive, and while some of the features they offer are nice to have like Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Assist, just about everyone wants Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Why not save some money and make an upgrade instead of trading in if everything else works fine?

****Note to anyone installing backup cameras. If you need to drill through metal, be sure to add a bit of touch up paint to the drilled area. This will rust when it is left bare. If youre going into plastic youre fine. Great video guys!!

Pro Tip: lots of old Toyotas have cruise control built in, even the base models.

The difference is that they dont install the cruise buttons if you didn’t pay for the Add-on . So what you can do is just buy the cruise control sticks.

I did this with my friend’s 2008 Yaris. Literally pop out the cover and screw in the stick and plug it in. The Dash already had the indicators and everything.

The part is only $10 and its been working for 12 years now.

Please, make more of these. Keeping old stuff alive is pretty important!

Car manufacturers approach to infotainment systems have always been mind boggling to me. Like they built and tested the car itself to perfection through months or years of R&D and millions of dollars, but then had the intern design and build the infotainment system with the pocket money he had left over from his birthday. The amount of expensive cars I've seen with dogshit quality reverse cameras or with slow as hell computers is too damn high.

For the rear view camera - instead of drilling a hole you can get a replacement enclosure for the number plate light with a spot for a camera. They cost maybe $4 and its a non-destructive solution!

Buying/Getting anything new is stupid now-a-days.

I even got my kids second hand for dirt cheap.

A tip to everyone for the backup camera. The better solution to use the camera when put in reverse is to connect the positive wire direct to reverse light, the negative wire in the trunk where is an bolt to the chasis to have the ground and change the setting in the Head Unit to show in automatic when the camera sent a signal to the unit, and with this every time you put the car in the reverse the camera show automatically in the unit

I love that you guys are advocating for upgrading the vehicle you drive, instead of dumping it and getting a new one (which some people can't afford) just because of the lack of tech. I've personally installed head units in my vehicles since I was 15. It looks better, sounds better, gives you the option to add more tech, and (probably most important) is the perfect opportunity to spend an afternoon with friends. Doing a project like this with friends is not only easier, but it gives you an excuse to spend hours bonding & having fun. While at the same time, it isn't some physically demanding workload, that your friends will avoid. Just look at how much fun was had in this video. You all did a great job on this one!

I like the $5k upgrade videos, but this is way more helpful to most folks. "hacking" a Bluetooth receiver into your cars existing CD changer is a game changer.

I love Plouffe's attitude during this entire video. He doesn't need some fancy new car knowing that his 20 year old one still runs fine, he clearly appreciates the upgrades he's begin given, and even when things went wrong he was quick to make sure Linus didn't feel bad, like with the drill bit scratching up other parts of the frame or the dashcam screen getting hidden.

Really helpful to explore the potential of upgrading an old car rather than buying a new one. Using Android Auto and a dashcam genuinely upgrades the driving experience. Thanks for the brilliant step-by-step walkthrough.

My entire youtube feed is pretty much just car stuff, tech stuff, and music.
Honestly if LTT starts doing more car content like this, I'd watch even more.
I've never owned a new vehicle and probably never will buy brand new.
Any way to upgrade quality of life in older vehicles, with tech pros' recommendations on products, is a win.

This is my favorite type of video you guys do. Just having fun, and upgrading some old stuff. I love when it's one of the employees getting an upgrade. Figuring out solutions as you go is great fun!

For the rear camera, you should have hooked it up to the 12 volt power for reverse lights so it automatically turns on when you put it into reverse

I’m glad you guys went with Sony. Their UI is simple and straight to the point. I’ve had alpine and kenwood most of my life but Sony wins me over bc of their UI

Probably worth pointing out that the base model cars tend to be easier to upgrade with these aftermarket mods compared to upgraded vehicles. The more features the automaker puts in a car, the more integrated everything becomes. That's especially true with head units with integrated / digital climate controls, and virtually all electric vehicles.

Keeping older vehicles in use is arguably even more important that reusing & repairing old electronics. Good video. Hope for more thing along the same line.

LTT, this video has a great reception because it speaks and generally applies to the normal folk. If you look at retrofitting older tech or older hardware to keep up-to-date you'll have a great series on your hands. This was a great watch 😀

As someone who already knows how to do upgrades/mods like a head unit. Im so glad LTT is showing people how to squeeze the life out of everything they own and enforcing right to repair in every industry 💪

I did this to my 2006 civic a few weeks ago. I bought my dad's civic and I will continue to do everything I can to keep this car, so many memories, and the handling feels as good as the first time I drove it.
