Presented by SNaHP executive board member and medical student James Waters at the annual meeting of Physicians for a National Health Program in Atlanta on Nov. 11, 2023.

James described the many ways that corporate health insurers harm seniors and people with disabilities who rely on Medicare. He also outlined PNHP’s recent report that tallied overpayments to so-called “Medicare Advantage” plans at up to $140 billion per year (money that could be spend on other priorities, like totally eliminating Medicare Part B premiums).

I pay $45 a month for Medicare Advantage and would pay ten times that for traditional MC. My health has always been excellent, no medications or surgeries. I know MC Advantage rips people off when they need health care most but that is the story of all health insurance companies. I paid top dollar for health insurance plans before retirement cause I had a family to be concerned about. I won't pay it now cause I'm tired of paying out for a benefit I never needed. It is a gamble, I don't know what my health will be this year. I do know our health system is awful, I was a nurse 44 years. It is now all based on profit. Legislatures look after themselves so even with Medicare, there are no good hospitals or nursing homes.
