As an aircraft mechanic, borescoping has really taken off in about the last 5 years for troubleshooting cylinders. We like the vividia ablescopes. They’re cheap enough to replace if you tear one up but good enough quality to see valves and crosshatch

The world would have unlimited energy if we could hook generators and batteries to Scotty’s hands in these videos. Haha. He’s the best. 💪👍

Scotty if that is the 1zz-fe motor, there was a TSB on those engines. What happened is Toyota mis-engineered the piston. What can be done is you order the new pistons and oil control ring or you pull the pistons drill one or two more holes in the pistons, or maybe open up the existing holes and then modify the oil control ring with more of a gap to allow more oil flow. The restriction of oil ended up excessively building up carbon and causing the oil control rings to seize and then the oil couldn't regulate the temps and, hence, the oil burn. Supposedly, Mobil One Full sythetic works best, I have ran Castrol Edge full synthetic for over 10 years and it's a amazing oil that's doesn't shear and handle the heats great but doesn't suspend and clean carbon like Mobil One does. I've owned my Corolla for almost 13 years. When I switched to Mobil One from Castrol Edge because I couldn't get it, I did end up having a leak near my chain tensioner. Mobil One full synthetic also demonstrated it's cleaning ability immediately vs Castrol Edge full synthetic. I would recommend to anyone who has the tools, time, and the ability to fix the piston and ring problem or just run Mobil One Full synthetic and possibly every once in a while run Marvel MMO in the last fews miles of a oil change! 👍

A replacement for Scotty's discontinued boroscope is the AUTOOL SVB305, same type of flex head boroscope with same features, is available at many online stores.

I like it better when Scotty uses video subject lines that aren't as dramatic as the last two. "I'm dying" and this? There's no need for the drama, as the content is so valuable.

Some of these newer engines that use low tension piston rings are consuming loads of oil. The problem is ppl are being told they can go 10 thousand miles or more between oil changes, and the oil ring gets gunked-up and freezes in place allowing the oil to blow by. The answer to this is to use a quality oil, and change your oil every 5 thousand miles.

I resolved the clogged low tension rings with berrymans, down the cylinder 4 times over 24 hrs. It dissolved the gunk, had trouble starting after treatment but it now burns one tenth of what it used to

Scotty did say how to fix a car that burns oil. He said to have the engine rebuilt or swap the engine with a newer one, but it costs a small fortune. Monitoring the oil level and filling up as needed is an affordable way of doing it.
There are additives that do help, like AT-205 or Restore engine treatment, and using an oil stabilizer can help, too.

i remember my brother was into chevy camaros back in the 70s n 80s and a common prob they had with oil gettin in the comb. chamber was the oil seals on the valve stems a tedious job not particularly hard but it fixed it or greatly improved most of the time

The cylinder wear you showed us 5:35 into this video is from the piston skirt rubbing the cylinder, not the rings. That's a classic piston skirt mark.

Scotty, there is a solution in a can!

Check out the video on YouTube talking about a piston soak.

My 2009 Camry with the 2.4 engine has 175k miles and was burning a quart a week.
I did what they call a piston soak with Berryman's B-12. On one video the guy used one can and in another the guy used 2 cans.
I used 2 cans. You take out the spark plugs and pour this fluid into the top of the cylinders and let it soak for 24 hours, hand turning the crank every few hours. The solution goes down and dissolves the carbon out of the rings and they start doing their job again. I could tell by the comment section that the stuff must work. Some were reporting an 80% reduction. To my amazement my engine does not burn oil anymore.
