If translated directly, "Tiangong" would be called a palace in the sky, but in fact it has a deeper cultural connotation. The "Heavenly Palace" actually refers to the place where the immortals and gods live in Chinese mythology, which has many mythological stories similar to the system of Norse mythology. Many spacecraft are named the same way, for example, the Mars rover is named after the god of fire, "Zhurong", because Mars is a red planet. The name of the lunar rover is named after the legendary goddess Chang'e who lives on the moon, and the name of the solar rover is named after the goddess of the sun "Xihe". So many of the names are related to Chinese mythology.

The comment section is so toxic. It doesn’t matter how much Chinese space technology comes from the Soviet Union or the west, but to be able to launch and build a space station by itself isn’t an easy feat.
We should congratulate China for catching up with the west and welcome healthy competition, not belittle them, calling their achievement “theft”, “copy”, or “not able to invent themselves”. If looking down upon somebody else makes you feel good, “superior”, then it is you that might have a self esteem problem, not them.

China's entire space program is the definition of "Fine. I"ll do it myself."

Edit: okay guys... I cannot possibly please everyone with my words. Just bear in mind that this is a diverse world, and for every aspect of your opinion there are plenty of people who disagree. If you feel an unstoppable need to argue with every different opinion, for the sake of your own mental health, I recommend seeking help before it's too late.

I am really glad Simon finally covered the Tiangong Space station, China has invested a ton in space technology for so many years and this is quite significant given how much external pressure the project has been facing. The success rate and safety record have been top notch too.
Also, this comment section stinks, talk about politics and conspiracy theories however you want, sure, but wishing death on the astronauts? I can't imagine the crap these people are on to feel any joy watching space stations explode and astronauts die in space.

China, I am so proud of you. Forty years ago no one could have believed that China would today achieve such spectacular advancements in science and technology. 中国加油 !

China is the only country that was able to launch a space station where the space station is 100% built by the Chinese with not international partners. China was also rejected by the US when it wanted to be part of the ISS. Honestly, what they did here is impressive.

On China's first manned mission into space when it was flag-showing time Yang pulled out a Chinese flag and next to it was a UN flag, the two were side-by-side i.e. at the same level, that was the attitude of the Chinese space programmes at that time, they ventured into space representing China as well as all humans on earth, no one identity was placed on top of the other. A nice thing to be regularly reminding ourselves of is that, the very reason China is building its own Space Station today was that when they requested to join the ISS the international community refused it, Everyone else, even Russia was allowed to come, but not China.
And here we are today, China's spacefaring capabilities have changed significantly, and so is their attitude, shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, to be honest.

U.S: you cannot participate in the ISS
China: no problem, we'll build our own.

A Chinese saying: Our friends help us to make small progress; our enemies force us to make great achievements.
Thanks you NASA, thank you Uncle Sam.

One of my favourite Tiangong facts was how proud they were of their food menu in launch promotional programs. As they ought to be, considering the fact that eating delicious foods is just as important as eating well in Chinese culture! If you ask a Chinese to choose between deliciousness and health, they'll say "both, " without any hesitation!😤

China missed the Age of Exploration hundreds of years ago, this time the Chinese will not allow China to miss out on space exploration

If you want to know more about China space program, "Dongfang Hour" I believe is the only channel on youtube that provide that. It is uploaded by 2 Americans based in Hongkong.

Reading through the comments, all I have to say is we dismiss Chinese progress to our own detriment. I remember a few years back the response to this kind of news would be 'we need extra research funding / incentives for students to study STEM / etc. to stay ahead' - not sure why it has suddenly become 'lala close our eyes and pretend it's not happening'. Something like a space station and scientific progress in general is obviously great for humanity as a whole - not everything has to be a confrontational competition, but the same attitude becomes very dangerous when it comes to the military for example. Thought we were all taught this in the story of the Tortoise and the Hare...

I'm glad you guys have covered this topic to complement the previous Mir and International Space Station videos. Each space station carries its own backstory. Does anyone know the backstory on why China was banned from participating in the ISS, which made them develop their own home-grown program from scratch?

Damn shame the comments section is full of anti-China hate rants which don't contribute to this topic though.
