Hip dysplasia is the under development of the acetabulum, or hip joint. Hip joint pain during or after activity can be a sign of hip dysplasia and can lead to osteoarthritis and the need for a hip replacement later in life if not treated.

Patients, who are are typically in their teenage years to mid-twenties, are ready for Periacetabular Osteotomy surgery (PAO) when the pain they experience affects their daily and sports-related activities. The goals of PAO surgery are to avoid get rid of the hip pain and to avoid the development of end-stage osteoarthritis of the hip.
