Why does the foundation show on the stucco bottom walls anyway?
Missing stucco at the bottom of most stucco walls is usually caused by ground settling.

Hello ambitious guys and gals interested in learning how to do it yourself, now possibly you can.
How? Watch this video to explain. We show and explain how to repair a foundation with stucco and cement plaster; the idea is to make it look good again so it’s not such an eyesore.

FYI, ground settling is as natural as white rice.
Perhaps this example will provide an easier understanding of what I’m referring to.
When I was an apprentice working for big plastering firms, the company I worked for was hired to stucco a new theater in Blackhawk.
I was working on this gun crew that blew the stucco onto the walls of this large movie theater. As usual, we stopped the stucco on the ground.
Jump ahead 35 years later. I am now a plastering contractor.

I got a call from a general contractor saying the bottoms of this same movie theater had cement about six-inches to a foot pointing outward horizontally a foot above the ground. That was nearly the stucco that fell and was not cleaned up, thus stuck to the concrete foundation and then showed as the dirt compacted.

I point this out to our subscribers and all who find themselves on this channel for whatever reason, as what we’re doing is common and not costly.
We show and explain how you can do it for the cost of materials.
I charged a few hundred bucks to fix this eyesore.

In 1980 a new rule or code came out that specified all new homes would have weep or drip metal screeds around the bottom perimeter hung an inch below the mud sill. The rule was that the stucco be at least 6 inches in a perfect world, this world is far from perfect.
Before 1980, most stucco homes brought stucco on top of the concrete foundation.
That means 80% of all homes in the country have the stucco touching the ground, big deal, my own home also had the stucco touching the ground.

FYI, folks’ ground settling is normal.
However, it gives the impression that stucco is missing at the bottom of the house instead of the ground compacting.

All subscribers with a question, type your question into our channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it’s done.

I thought stucco was never supposed to touch the ground... So confused about this material! Also, just found out water is seeping through plaster and cedar shingles on my 100+ year old home... So much termite damage... Thanks for the video!

You guys are the best! I’m watching these so I can keep my Miami, FL 60-yr old CBS home in good repair. My old home is constructed well, with concrete stucco outside, and plaster walls and celings inside. We occasionally get hurricanes, which sometimes require repairs to be done, and almost nobody here knows how to repair those walls so its hard to tell where the patch was done. Keep up the good work!

Hey Kirk! Thank you for taking the time to make these videos and share your knowledge with us.

As a new homeowner, I learn so much, dude, it’s like peering into the mind of a plastering Jedi Master.

You explain everything simply and clearly with a side of humor - so that we understand not just the “how” but the “why” and why doing things the right way is so important to get a great result.

Truly, the mark of a great teacher.

Sending you some love from the East Coast, and mad appreciation for your efforts - keep on cranking out this great content. 👊👊

Hi Steve, that depends if your wall is super clean, so  that you can eat off it and the cement plaster is going this thick it should adhere, therefor, I sometime add it.
If it fails I have to come back and re-do on my own time, so I make sure it's stuck forever.

David Caruso for This Old House.

But seriously folks, I'm looking buying a house that has this exact issue so this video has been super helpful. I didn't think it would be a very big job, and it's not. But it is a job I've never done before. Super good video. Thanks.
