Actually, most people watch till the end, but your audience retention is like 40% or lower because some people click away after 1 second (misclick or spooked by Japanese language on an English title). Your 85% viewers that are not subscribed is a great sign! It means YouTube is recommending your videos to people other than your subscribers and they are interested and click the thumbnail :) Just remind people to like the video and ask a question, so people can write a comment under the video. Comments and likes are the most important tools that the YouTube bot uses to decide if your video rocks or sucks. I'm going to move to France soon (not really, in 1 year) and I need to learn the language. I will apply your techniques to learn the basics.

Here’s some tips for beginners (I use these):
1. Watch Children’s shows: When your starting out Japanese don’t watch Japanese news for more learning. They will use very complex words that will be difficult. Instead watch educational shows for kids. They talk more basically then things made for older people.
2. Label Objects: labeling objects is really fun and helps you out. Get index cards and go around the house and start labeling things like door, window, bed, bookshelf, television, etc. Trust me, it’s a HUGE help. Put a romaji translation on the bottom also.
3. Japanese Dictionary: personally at night I like to go to the Japanese dictionary and created sentences. Then I say them out loud. It’s really fun, I also like recording myself.

Thank you for sharing your story with us! I'm a brazilian who just got to learn English, and now, my goal is to study, and gradually, speak, understand the Japanese language! I've watched many of your videos and I'm excited to watch a lot more! Keep the good work 先生!

I started learning Japanese only last September as a friend of mine made me join our Universities class on a whim. This January I'll be going to Japan on an exchange for one semester. It's hard to believe that's happening as only a little over a year ago I didn't know anything about Japan and now I am obsessed. Your channel really motivates me to learn Japanese, especially when you show the moments where you speak and make friends with complete strangers in Japan, so even if I'm still so poor at it I want to continue! がんばてください!

I really am so impressed by your work ethic and drive to learn a second language on top of Mandarin. I like that you spoke Japanese in this video to showcase your ability. I mean how else can people evaluate your fluency when you are describing how you learned Japanese and that it wasn't "easy". Like most things, you have to work hard and push yourself.

It's true studying in an academic setting keeps you motivated because of the competition and investment. Sadly because of the pandemic many of the video classes are failing many of our young students. Your channel has been awesome to encourage me to reach the next level probably level 2 to your level 10.

I’m not learning Japanese anytime soon but always great to see you advancing in your pursuit for excellence. Improving my subtitle reading is a bonus! :D

It's definitely not easy when English is the only language you've been speaking your whole life, but I'm going to stick with it and I hope to someday visit Japan.

The "are you still watching" line at the end just told me you are definitely a beautiful soul inside out :) Have a nice day!

Lately...when I hear Japanese being spoken, I literally start crying because of how badly I want to go to Japan and become fluent once and for all. I definitely cried tears of inspiration during this video. Thank you for sharing your journey with us!! 🙏 (PS: I subscribed as soon as I found you!)

I would love more videos exactly like this. Lots of Japanese language videos are either too fast or too slow. This feels far more comfortable for me to follow.

Im studying Korean but you always inspire me to go forward because you have a very realistic approach to language learning and i like and appreciate the honesty a lot. Many people make it seem so easy, because they don't want to appear vulnerable and show their mistakes while learning. That really twists the whole experience of language learning. No one is born a master. It is really difficult but sulking about it won't change anything.
Love your videos!

When I need a break from hardcore studying, I switch to Japanese songs, movies, or YouTube lessons. That way I can give my brain a rest without feeling too bad about it 😂

You speak at a set pace and I find it easy to pick out individual words in japanese and follow the conversation rather than the fast conversations of cathy cat or nobita. Currently hannah also speaks at a slower pace which I find easier to comprehend. Keep the video's coming as they are much appreciated, for when this horrible pandemic is over, my family and I will be on the first plane to Tokyo.

Anming you are always an inspiration to me! I have been studying Japanese for over a year now in a group class and private lessons. I am about to finish the first Minna no Nihongo book and I feel i do well at the exercises and i understand whats being explained to me but sometimes i feel frustrated when I watch some Japanese series on Netflix and when i hear them speaking it makes me feel i'll never understand everything they are saying but your videos keep me motivated even though im not in Japan I can still keep working hard to get better and better.

It's rare to see or rather to hear an American person that can pronounce Japanese this good. Japanese pronoutiation can be very hard for people with English first language (exactly like English for Slavic languages users).
For me (I'm from Poland) pronoutiation was the easiest thing about Japanese because Polish language has 95% sounds that can be used to pronounce Japanese syllables. It's one of the very few languages that actually have exact sounds for し、ち、じ、じゃ、ちゃ、ちょ、しゃ、しょ etc.
I understand pretty much everything that you said, but I still have a long way to be able to speak freely.
Living in Japan definitely helps practicing your spoken Japanese a lot.
I know it becuse living 4 months in England gave me way more (including confidence) than years of learning English in grade school and high school.

Thanks for sharing. As a 3rd generation Canadian Japanese, it's cool to see this. Unfortunately my native tongue was not passed down to me out of fear, due to the poor treatment of Canadian Japanese in the internment camps. Maybe one day I will aspire to learn my native tongue and also learn about my native culture/traditions. Keep doing what you do.

Thanks for the honesty that you struggled at first, as I'm struggling to learn the language too. Right, back to learning!
