Not everyone has the luxury of having friends many people are introverted also prefer to be alone and can still be successful.

I agree that pain and suffering are important in life bc this is one way we learn lessons. It is also one opportunity tor us and others to love, help, to learn empathy or to forgive. Thank you for this interview.

Money most definitely solves almost ALL of your problems. Not having money contributes to ALL of your problems. I'm in a really bad spot now and money would 100% solve them.

Am i the only one who found peace, serenity, joy after going back to God?

How to find joy is very subjective and varies greatly from person to person. It really comes down to your personal values and asking what makes you happy.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. WE NEED MORE CLASSES LIKE THIS. TAUGHT IN HIGH SCHOOL AND JUNIOR COLLEGE.

Well, for most people, money is only enough when they finally get old and retire. The system is hugely flawed because when we need resources the most, we are young and broke. However, when we are old and have less need for these resources, we have typically saved enough by that time.

It's all about intentional living. Be intent with your time and do things that bring you joy and not keep up with society's norms.

It's always funny to me how TV networks owned and run by billionaires are able to run stories about 'money's not that important' being discussed at hyper elite universities with a straight face.

I would A’s this class. Those who do not understand pain will not understand peace.

If you have to pay $5, 000.00 in tuition to take a class, "What makes life worth living?" Then you have the wrong purpose of your existence. The majority people around the world work endlessly without having time to think, "What makes life worth living." They just know they have lot of responsibilities to be alive day by day.

Full disclosure, Shriver is the publisher of this book. Open Field is her imprint at Penguin Random.

I always thought there should be an elective during the 2nd Semester of High School Senior YEAR and class similar to this!!! If so, i truly TRULY believe more kids will become most assuredly become "better" ADULTS !!! Kudos for Yale to have such a class as I am sure all the students will have benefited from this course in some form or fashion in their lives!!!

I've a friend who graduated from Yale forty years ago. I didn't bother with college at all. He's broke, I'm not.

The issue is that people try to reach the goal of supreme happiness/ joy so they're extremely future driven and depressed along the journey to what they think will end up being happiness. Our goal should be finding contentment, being ok with what we have, looking around, saying, one day I'm gonna have this thing and it will make me happy, but if i don't get it, that's ok because I'm already at my goal, I'm content/ at peace with myself. You can get this and that but even once you have this and that, you won't find happiness/ joy because you aren't content with yourself at the moment, so no amount of achievements or anything will truly make you happy. I think one of the best way to be content/ at peace with yourself is to find religion but I'm sure there are other ways too.
