One of the toughest parts of living, working or studying abroad is making new friends and getting to know people. This video goes through some helpful tips in meeting locals and make friends while living abroad.
This is good for Rotary Youth Exchange Outbound and Inbound students, AFS, EFS, EF and other study abroad and exchange programs.
Sorry to all my friends who I did not get a picture into the video. I feel bad that I could not get more pictures in from Australia, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia and many other places.

Alcohol is a great way to unite people (especially here in Finland, where people are a bit reserved).

I think another tip is to not always hang out with people from the same country as you. I knew so many people who just hung out with their American friends and never really got to know or become friends with any locals.

I lived in Japan and stayed in a sharehouse company called Borderless house, which had sharehouses all over with half foreign and half Japanese, with the main aim being cultural/language exchange and making local friends for foreigners/foreign friends for Japanese. I made lots of great local friends in Japan there. I also was studying the language and am fluent now.

It depends on the place. If it's in Brazil you don't even need to do anything because they'll come to you.

this is a cool video Mark as I live in New Zealand something usual here is people moving, so I would add to those advices that you should keep the attitude of meeting friends all the time as you never know when the current ones will leave the country.

Os teus vídeos são excelentes, muito informativos, sou português, mas moro no Uk actualmente.. aqui é tudo muito diferente do nosso Portugal.. povos nórdicos europeus são mais "frios".. não têm o lado latino dos países do sul.. concordo com os teus conselhos.. e acho fundamental, teres e mostrares interesse, na cultura e na língua do país onde vives! great video mark i agree with you on that one just go out enjoy life and make new friends when you're in overseas and speak foreign language to them or just a little bit especially when you're a tourist and experience more awesome information dude :)

Great video. I'm moving to Brussels, Belgium in 10 days to do a 5 month exchange and I simply can't wait.

Also I've been thinking about deleting my facebook due to many reasons similar to what you said (not meeting as many locals, etc) but I get this feeling that I might be able to connect with more Belgians by having it on? I'm still not so sure.

If you have any further advice on living in Belgium I'd greatly appreciate it :)
