Be careful of Rhinitis Medicamentosa using decongestant sprays

Information from NHS website.
Most people can use decongestants safely, but they're not suitable for everyone.

They should NOT be used by the following groups of people without getting advice from a pharmacist or GP first:

people taking other medicines
people with diabetes
people with high blood pressure
people with an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism)
men with an enlarged prostate
people with liver, kidney, heart or circulation problems
people with increased pressure in the eye glaucoma
Babies and children
Decongestants should not be given to children under 6 years of age.
don't use if you are or could be pregnant - I added this as it reduces blood flow to the placenta.

Very important video yes! I’ve had chronic sinusitis on my right side for years. I didn’t want to use these sprays long term so I started doing netti nasal rinses with cooled boiled water and pink Himalayan salt which worked great for a few hours but always came back. I’ve recently experimented with adding a small amount of xylitol and bingo my sinuses clear for days, I can leave it much longer between rinses. Apparently xylitol feeds the microbiome which helps rebalance the flora resulting in a relieve in inflammation. It seems to work for me. 😅

Exactly my thought. I had to put all of the nose drops in the trash. Saline was my second choice...at least it isn't addictive.

Thank you very much for this information. Is there anything that you do recommend that would be "safe"?

We had a lot of problems here in Mexico. With the COVID pandemic, a lot of people used them. I had cases of people that had used them for 2 years! It is very dificult. It is like an addiction for them. Greetings from CDMX.

As a sufferer of chronic allergic sinusitis (well thats what they say i have) I'd love to hear what we can use for long term use? Having had surgery, tried every antibiotic and steroids and nothing works, even after seeing 5x ENT all saying sinuses are clear, I'd love your opinion as nothing else except sinus rinses that give temporary relief..

Are the sterilised saline ones safe? I have horrible post-nasal drip at night and use sterimar every night because it helps. Is this safe?

Been stuck on this crap for years. Im now only using it in one side as to let the other heal while still being able to breathe. Hoping the other will clear up enough to stop all together.

So I have a question. Usage over three or four days maximum is not recommended. Fine. But in a day, typically usage may extend to up to three doses per day over three days which is about nine doses. If you only take one dose, one spray instead of two for instance at the very end of the night before bed… Does the limitation still apply? When I was younger I took an old spray called Dristan and I swore by the stuff because I do not like nasal congestion. And eventually I got to the point where I couldn’t breathe unless I had the stuff and it was a very painful process that took a long time to get myself off the stuff. Since then, they don’t make that anymore and I switched Afrin. However I restrict usage of the stuff to only when the symptom becomes completely unbearable any other way and I typically only take it at night before I go to sleep just so that I can sleep. So I only take it once a day instead of three times a day. Will I still have delirious effect after three or four days just taking it once a day, or would it be OK if five or six days if I only take it once a day.
