Seneca was a stoic philosopher and rhetorician. He’s one of the first stoics for which there are considerable literary remains for us to study. In his moral essay, On The Shortness Of Life, Seneca gives us an urgent reminder on the non-renewability of our most important resource: our time.

Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium in Athens in the early 3rd century BC. Even though it is over 2000 years old, more and more people are discovering how Stoicism is not only relevant to modern times, but can be applied in very simple, yet strong ways.

true story. my stepfather retired in october after working thirty years saving up for retirement. He often worked overtime, sixty plus hour weeks saving up. In january, he was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. He died on April 6th, four months later. His only memories were not of time spent with his family but time spent at work.

Don't put off the important things for a tomorrow that may never come...

This also goes along with my theory of why time seems to fly by from your 20's onward. As kids, we go to school and every hour we're in a new class learning new things and having all sorts of new experiences. In your 20's, it begins the rut to where your days aren't much different from the day before. Sure different things come up at work but you're applying the same skills, going to the same place, seeing the same people and next thing you know one decade of your life is as distinguishable as when you were 16 vs 15 years old. Crazy.

Balance is the key. When I started focusing on optimizing my time I realized I was falling into daily cycles of constant productivity. It’s draining and can definitely lead to depression. I think it’s much more important to ENJOY our time here

"Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others have laboured hard for."
Every worthwhile lesson you ever learned has already been learned countless times by every human that's ever existed. The knowledge of that time is as relevant now as it was then. Learn what others have learned for you so you don't make their mistakes.

Deleting Facebook was one of the greatest choices I have made in the last five years for sure, especially regarding saving precious time.

I've learned SOOO much more here on YouTube in my thirties than I did in both College and my Masters degree.
WTF, YouTube if used right to learn and grow is not a time waster.
You can say the same goes with insta, twitter, fb and the others! though, that one is a MUST daily.

Stoicism is such a great way to find inner peace in this chaotic world we live in today. There is no question that anyone can take something from this philosophy!

The one on spending all of your time for the future hit me because the future is fragile and unpredictable yet SO MANY people are expected to have a life plan in high-school.

The irony here is that people are quick to turn against “you tube” as wasting time... but #10 here essentially stated that spending your time on Philosophy was seen as the pinnacle of achievement and best investment of leisure time.

You literally have thousands of videos from experts in any field of study all over the world at your fingertips without ever leaving your house.

If Seneca were alive today he’d be a content creator on YouTube and be watching it 8 hours a day 😂

I appreciated the idea of foreseeing what could go wrong. Something I want to do more of with the complex sales cycles that I often engage in. I also love the final idea of being a student of life and truth. I've always been curious to know what is real and how things work and it brings me a lot of joy to continue to explore to that end

I always get mix feeling when I watch or read things that talks about "efficient living". Obviously, I watch these kind of videos to improve the way i spend my time. But, it really confuses me when it says "don't work endless hours only to be happy after retirement", and then says "don't waste your time talking and having a drink with your coworker. Spend that time working on what you really want to do". I feel like being chocked by expectations and endless goals. I work in a job that people says "so good you work with what you love". I got this job because I did exactly what this video says (spend every spare minutes studying and preparing to get this job I wanted). But may I say, Job is a Job. It still eat my life up. I much rather spend my free time drinking with coworker to get to know them as a person. Cuz I think I'd remember time spend with people whom I met than my 'success' on my death bed. (sorry, my English is not perfect. please ignore any spelling mistakes)

Quite amazing how a work that was written more than two thousand years ago sounds relevant in 2020. Like with all your other videos, you have made a nice one to summarise Seneca's tips of time management.
