Back about 60+ years ago my grandparents had a farm in East Tx no electricity. At night the adults would sit out on the porch but us kids would lay out on old blankets and look at the stars. When everything around is totally dark, no moon no street lights no ambient lights you can see so much more of the heavens. You could easily see the Milky Way and the constellations. Sometimes it felt like they were so close as dark faded into dark with only the light of stars. I can see how the ancients knew more they could see more.

The picture you showed when Joe said "very tall, strange looking figures with little monkey people on their laps" is not Sumerian, but Egyptian. The "very tall, strange looking figures" are Pharaoh Akhenaten (son of Pharaoh Amenhotep lll) and his wife Nefrititi and the "little monkey people on their laps" are three of their daughters, most likely Meritaten, Meketaten and Ankhesenpaaten. The figures look strange, because they are depicted in the typical style of the Amarna period, which was highly stylized. That relief is from a house shrine and is currently located in the Egyptian Museum of Berlin.
