Does a native accent guarantee ultimate confidence and freedom?
Recently I’ve been getting a bunch of questions from people who want to speak with a native accent because they don’t feel confident in English.

But is that the solution?
In this video, I'll answer that!

I’ll also share with you what has REALLY helped me and thousands of my students reach limitless fluency (Hint: YES it’s about pronunciation, and NO, it’s not about sounding native!)

You’ll get to hear some of my students too, who will share their experiences and how they have changed. #pronunciation #speaklikeanative #speaklikeamerican

To me, it's rather pleasant to listen to a person speaking smoothly and confidently, nowadays I don't even care if they are speaking like a native or with a foreign accent, and that's my ultimate goal as well. Thanks hadar for this video, you rock.

Hello Hadar,
You're right... Accent isn't everything and your mastery of the target language depends on your personal development more than anything else.
Lots of people tried to pick up the accent like a local, but even a non-human like Arnold Schwarzenegger had to fail... :)
This whole thing is still, hopeless..., people can progress always and everywhere, but the process is very slow..., often too slow...
Thank you Hadar, that you give people hope again...!
Everyone loves you for that...!

Thank you
Michel

Wow, Hadar, it was such an eye-opening message!! I feel weak when speaking English in front of native speakers, and I want to be free from this feeling with your help. Since I joined your community, I've been feeling much better about speaking English in front of people. I even made my first ever video and posted it on FB for the first time. I know all I need to do is to follow your lead and work toward that goal. You are my mentor!!

I like this mentality a lot. I was upset that I couldn't speak like a native even though I have learned English for a long time, you did a great help to me with this video, thanks much.

Hello, Hadar. I honestly kind of agree and kind of disagree at the same time. I mean, why not teach both: how to be confident and how to sound near native?
I’m a native Spanish speaker and an English teacher, too. I’m of the opinion that, in most cases, accents never go away. What I mean is that you’ll still have a bit of an accent when you speak a language that is not your native one, especially if you started learning your second or third language in adulthood.
I know my English overall is not perfect, and I’m aware that occasionally I make grammar or pronunciation mistakes, but that doesn’t put me off doing my best to communicate well. However, I’ve been told by native speakers of English that my English is great, and most of the times, they’ve followed up their statement about my English with this question: “Where’d you learn it?” And I think their follow-up question is because they can hear an accent in my voice.
So, no matter how good your second or third (or fourth, and so on and so forth) language is or how well you speak (pronounce) it, you’ll still have an accent. Natives can tell you’re a non-native speaker. I always tell my students about this.
I also always tell them that they don’t have to necessarily sound near native to speak English well, meaning if they want to choose to often speak English with a heavy Latino accent, that’s fine, too. However, they need to make sure their listeners are following and understanding what they’re saying so that communication doesn’t break down.
So, what if students’ goal is to learn to sound like a native? If that’s the case, why not teach them that while working with them on their confidence and making sure they understand that good pronunciation takes time and practice, and they don’t have to rush? I teach my students this acronym I came up with: TPP (time, practice, and progress). They need time to practice and to practice they need time, so they need to make the time to practice, and by taking the time to practice, they’ll make progress (improve). Sounds a little redundant, LOL, but I think it makes sense.
Anyway, I know this comment is rather long, but I’d like to please know your thoughts on this if possible.

Thanks this was very helpful. This resonates because it is confirmation from a teacher with first-hand experience that it's important to understand that sounding like a 'Native Speaker' should not necessarily imply higher intellect, nor better ability for intelligent self-expression

a person always succumbs to the influence of the environment. Being among Northerners, we try to speak like Northerners, being among Southerners, we will speak like Southerners. Isn't that right?

I think you're missing one crucial element here, the second a non-native speaker opens their mouth people cannot help but judge his or her language based off of the accent no matter how the language actually is. So, non-native English speakers want to change that by improving their accent.
You say you do not work with your students on accent, but yet you teach them intonation and all the jazz! Hadar you wouldn't be where you currently are if it was for the accent!

The concept of Native speaker has been rebutted by several experts like David Crystal or Erich Lurda. As long as speakers' speech is understanble the accent is not important because there are many accents even inside America and England.
