Do Linux Users Have An Elitist Attitude?

preview_player
Показать описание
It is often said that many, if not most, Linux users have an elitist attitude. We love to talk about how much better our OS is compared to the alternatives. Linux users often talk about how Linux changed their lives, changed the way they thought about computers and the world in general. And to those outside of the Linux community, we come across as a bunch or elitist, arrogant A-holes. But do we really have an elitist attitude? Yes, we do!

Everyone Else: We aren't Elitist
DT: Of Course we are! We are the 2%!
Me: Well, he has a point...

I wouldn't say I'm elitist. I just continue to be amazed by Linux and how I just keep learning something new every day.

Ok, I didn't expect that you will say proudly that we're the elite. Take your like, you deserve it.

Hey, I'm not an elitist. My butler and maid even agree.

This is sort of encouraging but I'm still just a humble Linux Noob.

Average Linux user: Derek, are we elitist?
Derek: Yesn't. Btw, we use Arch.
Joking aside, good points here and some things come with the territory.
I am still amazed by the endless passionate efforts made by the whole Linux community making software and keep the wheels turning on.
And also amazed by the people still pirating software and claim to be "hackers".
Downloading a torrent with cracked software doesn't make one a hacker, installing Linux and tweak every configuration file at one's willing is hacking the system to do your bidding.
Respecting the hacker definition made and propagated by RMS or ESR.

My cable box runs Linux, my T.V. runs Linux, my dog runs Linux.... Don't question that last one, just trust me.

This kinda feels like a speech you get right before they hand out the Cool Aid and matching sneakers.

I'm not computer literate because I learned linux. I decided to learn linux because I thought of myself as being computer literate. I was confident in my ability to learn it. So many people don't have such confidence and this is one of the main reasons so many people won't try it. If you've heard someone say "but I'm scared I might break it" then you know what I'm talking about.

I don't consider myself an "elitist". I consider myself a computer user. That's it. Yes, I know about the inner workings of different operating systems. But that doesn't take a genius to figure out. I use CentOS for my dedicated web server. I use Arch for my desktop environment. I use Windows for gaming (because that's all it's good for XD). If people would stop bitching about taking time to learn other operating systems, they would be "elitists" too. It doesn't take as long as they think, but they seem to believe that it takes years. It takes years to MASTER the different operating systems, yes. You could learn everything you "need" to know about various operating systems in a matter of months. They're just too lazy to do so.

OpenBSD users are the 0.02%, therefore they are more 1337 than Loonix users ;)

In short: yes.
Long answer: yes they do.

I don't like the word Elitist because it implies that the those persons want to insulate themselves above others, when in fact majority/most Linux users would love people to join their "elite" community and are actively helping those that are in the transition phase.

As a Linux user, I agree with every single point you mentioned.
But does "elitism" mean "being/feeling superior"? I believe No.
