This is a short video about PACING for people with chronic pain. Pacing is regularly recommended for chronic pain patients. Pain self-management strategies are central to CNCP treatment and are concerned with improving self-efficacy, reducing suffering and enhancing quality of life.

According to the Oxford Concise Dictionary the term ‘pacing’ has a variety of definitions across a range of contexts:
Walk at a steady speed, especially without a particular destination and as an expression of anxiety.
Measure (a distance) by walking it and counting the number of steps taken.
Move or develop (something) at a particular rate or speed.
Lead (another runner in a race) in order to establish a competitive speed.
(pace oneself) Do something at a restrained and steady rate or speed.
Cardiac pacing – regulation of the rate of contraction of the heart muscle by an artificial cardiac pacemaker
Normal gait of some horses.
Stereotyped pacing; a habit in all caged animals, especially if they are active species and are confined in very small areas. May cause excessive wear in footpads, in snakes the damage is usually to the front of the head.
Setting the pace or rate of movement.

As a retired occupational therapist I used to guide my patients to work on simplifying activities to make things easier and cause less pain. 1. simplification: doing the same activity but making it a little simpler, like buying the smaller size laundry detergent rather than the jumbo size that is heavier, or placing the heavier items in your cabinet at easier reach. 2. Pacing: you don’t have to do everything in the same day especially if you’re retired you have time. It’s about cutting up the activity into parts and making that fit with the amount of energy that does not cause pain. 3. adaptions: this is where you use objects to complete The task in the easier way, like using a cart in the kitchen. I had difficulty carrying my Full laundry hamper. I checked out laundry hampers with wheels but they were kind of pricey. We had a small movable cart and my husband put the laundry hamper on with a couple bungee cords. I am now able to do the same task easier and it didn’t even cost me any money. Just look at a task and see how you can make it easier, more efficient or using tools to help you out. 🪛🗜🧰⛓
