According to Zechariah Sitchin and the Ancient Aliens theory, Mars was once a habitable planet with advanced technology that was destroyed in a nuclear war opposing "gods" long before the dawn of human history. According to both, it's the collective memory of ancient people on what happened to Mars that led them to name it in honor of the god of war in multiple civilizations.
There are huge unknowns about human history, I wouldn't be surprised if we find out we're not the first civilization to reach this level of technology. In fact, I think we're maybe the second, third... evolution of an ancient species that screwed up.

The bombs that were dropped in Japan created shadows on the ruins of buildings: The shadows being all that remained of some of the victims. Wouldn't there be some evidence of this occuring at the other sites if a nuclear bomb were to have been used? Similarly, wouldn't there have been records of population changes because of infertility and an increase of stillbirths, premature births, and birth defects? Additionally, even with high statistical confidence, correlation does not equal causation.
