British vs. American vs. Canadian English - Don't Understand Anything They Say!

When we moved to Germany, we experienced some unexpected culture shock as we heard Germans speaking English with American accents and pronunciation, but used British-English vocabulary! 😊 Because of our confusion with English spoken in Germany, we got our friends Jenna, a Canadian living in Germany, and Carys, a Brit from Liverpool to come on our channel to compare British vs American vs Canadian English and see if we could understand each other even though we claim to speak the same language! 😃

Yes differences in English. I visited Sumter in South Carolina (SC) with a Britsh colleage. The hotel had an advert poste in the lobby: „Shag contest tonight My British colleague looked puzzled. „They shag in public? Brilliant - let’s go.“ Well long story short a shag in SC is not the same than a shag in the UK. In SC the shag is the state dance while in the UK you shag (fu...) a girl.
Fige years later I‘ve been back to Sumter with the same US colleague, there weas a shag night in the local shag club. We bought a T-shirt for our British colleague to wear at home: Sumter shag club, est. YYYY. (I forgot the year). He proudly wears it.

Lollygaggin' in german would be 'rumtrödeln', I think.

Here are some German dialect words that many Germans won‘t know:
- Guck = Tüte (plastic bag)
- Nore machen = sich beeilen (to hurry)
- Debbich = Decke (blanket)
- Krumbiere = Kartoffeln (potatoes)
- trielen = sabbern (leaking a small amount of spittle in a child or leaking drops of tea in a tea pot)
- letz = verkehrt / verkehrt herum (wrong or inside out)

I can't believe that I missed this one. I had watched Jenna's video but totally missed that yall made one as well on the same subject lol lol. That was a fun video!!! I’m from Canada and a couple we use here are...the first one was in your vid at the start, where Jenna said “toque”. Pronounced tuk, sounds like Luke. We’ve used it always here, it’s the hat you’d wear in winter covering up your head and ears. Another one is “Bunnyhug”. Lol. Mostly used here In Saskatchewan where I live. Even outside of my province ppl look at you weird when you say it. It’s a hooded sweater with or without a zipper, a hoodie I guess. Another local one here in my province is “bumper shine”. It’s a winter thing we used to do as young kids. You basically just crouch down and hang onto an unsuspecting drivers bumper as he’s driving and just sorta ski down the street on your boots. That’s fun, until you hit a patch of road without snow or ice. Lol. Those are a few that I can think of now, hope you enjoy them!

In our English lessons in Germany, we were taught that there are differences between British and American English, but there were just a few general rules and examples given. Like “realise” and “realize” (words ending on “-ise / -ize), “program” and “programme”, or the (missing) dot in “Mr and Mrs Doe.”
The “Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary” was our standard.

Fun video! I'm originally from Pittsburgh, PA which has its own super strange dialect as well, most well-known, I think is "yinz" (similar to the way southerners use ya'll... "Yinz goin' to the game today?" Or "gum-band" for rubber band? Some people refer to sweatpants as "gum-waisted pants" 😬 I definitely didn't hear of the UK or the Canadian words (except for Timbit) hahaha

In Eastern Canada a very common version of the a-boot accent is that instead we say a-boat

Great video, maybe it helps people to get a better understanding of languages in general.

Reminds me of how hard it was, to explain to people from the UK and Australia, that me speaking German doesn't necessarily mean I'm German. "You speak English but you're not from England are you?" was my way of explaining, how languages are often spoken in more than one country and have very unique regional variations.
