What the SWELL!?? ER Doctor Reacts

Although it’s fairly rare for a hospital to have an on-call oromaxillofacial surgeon, the ER is still the right place to go when you have a significant amount of facial swelling. We may not be able to extract teeth or take care of certain deep space infections, but we DO have:

1) antibiotics
2) pain meds
3) CT scan & labs to ensure you don’t need an emergent procedure

Why are dental and vision separate from medical insurance? They should be combined. It's all part of our bodies.

There should be a dental section of every single ER in the country your mouth is not separate from your body. And is a major contributing factor to your overall health.

I knew a young, strong police officer in his 20s that died from a tooth infection. It was devastating. Teeth problems can 100% kill you.

I suffered to the point of very dark thoughts with trigeminal neuralgia for 2yrs. 11 specialists and my GP gave up and dismissed me as a drug seeker or head case. The old shite retired and the new GP looked at the very first x-ray taken and said, I believe this area is your wisdom teeth showing impaction. See a dentist, STAT.
He was right. SIX impacted wisdom teeth, several had burrowed into the trigeminal nerve tract causing the neuralgia. There's some permanent damage causing ear pain with atmospheric changes and occasional sparkly pain in my sinuses. That GP spent the next year it took to stabalize my health being my greatest advocate, telling me he had 2yrs of bad medicine to make up to me. Best doctor I ever had.

Dental should be covered under medical unless it's cosmetic work you want done. Dental infection causes heart attacks, brain infections, lung diseases and death!

Yep. Dental care has been so lacking for working class in USA

Untreated oral infections can also lead to heart failure, especially staph

i had a very bad dental infection a while back, it turned out to be caused by a bone chip that had cracked off my
mandible. i had it drained 3 times over the course of like 3 months before i ended up in the ER because it had gotten so big it was pushing my throat closed and i couldnt swallow. 1 emergency surgery and a 7 day hospital stay later, im alive and well. shits wack

ERs should at least have on call dentists for these type of energencies, an abcess can kill someone and sometimes waiting to be seen by a dentist takes a long time, most dentists are closed on the weekends, holidays and evening hours

Why is there not an emergency dentist/oral surgeon on call at the ER to deal with this type of stuff?

Rinse with warm salty water. I've had a history of teeth issues. My sister is a dental hygienist and told me about the warm salty water. It's helped immensely every time I had an infection. Like, I was 80% better the next day. It's really amazing.

My daughter’s face looked the same and she had an abscess and they kept giving her antibiotics thinking it was an infection but it was prolonged so much that even after surgery the first time that claimed infection. It was not it was “ Rare Salivary Gland cancer”. MD Anderson helped in this situation by not overlooking anything.

I had wisdom teeth get infected, the side of my face was swollen and the dentist didn't have a clue why. Amoxicillin killed the infection. I did my own research and found that the lymph gland on the lower jaw is affected and stops removing the lymph fluid and gets backed up. The lymph glands usually remove toxins - so you have to push hard on the lower jaw from the front of the chin toward the neck, which is the way it normally travels. There is also a place above each collar bone to massage the lymph system to get the fluid moving again.

If you have an
Squeeze lemon and garlic on a cottonball, place on infection....it takes it right down. Get to a dentist.

I had my hubby to do it. He didn't believe me. He was surprised. Natural remedy❤

You will still need antibiotics

I saw a 23-year-old man pass away from an absence in his tooth that went to his heart and caused pericarditis.. We need an overhaul of our emergency room and the thinking behind not treating dental abscesses..

Don"t ignore those...infections can spread and become deadly. I charge my dental expenses, use care credit, county health, borrow, sell stuff, steal, anything.

I looked like that when I was sent to the ER. My tooth was angry but not abscessed.
My face kept swelling until I looked like the elephant man! 😮
I spent 3 days in the ER and was on antibiotics through an IV. I was also taking antibiotics orally.
It was a gruesome experience, one I hope to never have again.
No oral surgeon visited me in the hospital so they kept giving me medicine and instructed me to see one when I was released.
The tooth was removed in the oral surgeon's office and it was a relief!
Sadly since no oral surgeon went to the hospital, I suffered for 3 days plus the time spent waiting to be seen by one.
I had never been to the ER before and I haven't been since.
I initially went to an oral surgeon and that's who sent me to the ER. If anything like this happens again, I'll go to a different oral surgeon. One who has the confidence to treat me.

I almost died from mine. Thank goodness the ER doctor knew to drain it and put me on IV antibiotics. He even called to get dental surgery set up for 24 hours later.
