The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or "Mormons" is a sect of Christianity whose believes include spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ across the world. This results in missionary work to many nations during which time the missionaries learn the language, culture and slang of these host nations.

The church is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah and the 300th Military Intelligence Brigade of the Utah National Guard is headquartered right down the road in Draper, UT.

This synergy between LDS members and the U.S. Army makes for highly prized and specialized human intelligence collectors and linguists.

I remember I visited Salt Lake City a couple years ago and me and my mom walked into a bookstore. We were speaking Spanish and this dude that worked there walked up to us and started talking to us in perfect Spanish and told us he learned it all on his mission to Peru.

Oh, I thought you meant critical as in criticizing the US Army, that somehow made more sense in my mind at first, but I stand corrected.

I'm ex-LDS, and active duty Air Force. I no longer practice and have no plans to ever go back for purely personal reasons. But I can confirm that the LDS church is one of if not the single most logistically impressive organizations of all time. Everything from language training to humanitarian aid they have down to a perfected science. They preform what are effectively military personnel recalls BETTER than the actual military. To explain briefly, in the event of some contingency, i.e. WW3 breaks out, military units have rosters of personnel laid out by their command structure. The base commander directs unit commanders to recall troops for action, they disseminate that instruction to the various section supervisors within their unit, the section leads disseminate to supervisors, who call individual troops, or direct those troops to call each other in a loop so the last troop in the loop calls the supervisor to confirm everyone before them was also notified. In the event of a natural disaster, LDS members are assigned to check in on other members using extenisve and careful record keeping to look after each other in a giant network, and the instant any one of them notice another needs help, they can quickly coordinate with local church leadership to deploy locally maintained humanitarian aid resources to look after that member within hours or even minutes of an incident, including anything from food and water purification to hardware like chainsaws for damage control to shelters. Their church building are ALL built with disaster ratings of all kinds in mind. Most places are zoned for specific local hazards, buildings are required to have more earthquake protection in California and tornado protection in Oklahoma, for example. LDS church buildings max out those measures across the board so they can be used as staging grounds for any disaster anywhere, if theres an earthquake in Kansas and a tornado in Colorado, LDS churches are built to withstand all but direct impacts. FEMA has frequently come to rely on LDS humanitarian aid efforts because they are so fucking fast and efficient with first response that clean up is often well under way or even done depending on severity of the incident by the time FEMA can even show up, and are able to collect a priority list and get a handle on what needs to be done, preforming what is effectively near instant reconnaissance and feedback systems.

They've developed what is widely recognized as the single most effective language teaching course on Earth, they can establish basic, functional fluency in anyone and in any language, and even multiple in some cases in as little as a few weeks, and rarely more than three months, including notoriously complex languages like Arabic and Mandarin, which will military linguistic courses will take as long as 18 months to establish a satisfactory degree of proficiency.

Say what you will about religion and spirituality but it cannot be denied Mormons are damn good when it comes to managing people. It's the one thing I kinda miss about the church.

I've lived with a Mormon family. They took in my family when we were homeless. I appreciate what they did but it drove me crazy.

I had the honor of training these outstanding Soldiers in small boat operations in Coronado California and the Great Salt Lake. Most if not all had completed one to multiple LDS/Mormon and Special Forces missions overseas. These Soldiers are some of the smartest people I have ever met. Most spoke at least spoke one or more languages with a secondary education. These soldiers kept up with my 19 year old Marines s driving and schlepping rubber boats all over the ocean and beaches of NAB Coronado, San Clemente Island, and Camp Pedleton. Again it was a great honor privilege to serve with these Men. De oppresso liber, Semper Fidelis!

Some communities have given so much to this country. Mormons, Indians, Pacific Islanders, and more. I served with a lot of LDS guys and they're some of the most squared away soldiers anywhere.

They actually even looked into the missionary training center (MTC) for ways to teach a second language as well. Something about being able to get someone speaking another language in 9-12 weeks was a draw for them I guess.

I am a member of the of the church. I served a mission in Guatemala and had to learn Spanish as well as a Mayan dialect called Q'eqchi'.
Thank you for emphasizing that this documentary is not a representation of mainstream LDS and it was about a cult offshoot.
Thank you for your service and for all you do man

They roll deep, especially in the alphabet agencies: squeeky clean records for a clearance and indepth knowledge of some pretty obscure languages and cultures from missions help too.

I served with many people that were LDS...they were to a person, some of the hardest working, competent and disciplined people I have ever met.

I was in LA one day and was fucking speechless when I saw a blonde blue eyed Mormon speaking Mandarin to locals with his church sign and then when I walked past he spoke to me in fluent Spanish. Respect their devotion

I am member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. My dad served in Russia and still speaks fluent Russian, and my brother served is Brazil and speaks fluent Portuguese. Our church has worked with the cia to teach languages to agents. Perfecting a language in less than 2 years is crazy.
