At some point, you stop practicing and you start performing--the ultimate test of your abilities. For most people, that comes with an uncontrollable adrenaline rush, which can make you look and feel underprepared. Brian talks through what happens when that anxiety hits, why it's a good sign, and how to prepare for it!

I love how compassionate seasoned performers are with performance anxiety. It's really nice when people remember what it's like to be new.

This is the best advice about dealing with performance anxiety I've ever heard. I know he was manly talking about anxiety during magic but this applies to all other kinds of crowd performance related jobs/activities. Thanks for the awesome advice Brian!

Best Q&A yet. I’m not typically someone who gets stage fright, but I do get anxiety. This applies to every form of anxiety, I feel. I’m going to take this advice of diverting nerves into something what doesn’t put the focus on me until I am comfortable to take the spotlight. I will put the deck of cards in other’s hands and take it back when I’m comfortable.

I love it. Thank Brian.

A great thing to remember is to tell yourself “I am not nervous, I am excited” and it helps give you a positive outlook on what your about to do

Wonderful advice. Thank you. I started performing professionally in June of last year and I too (and still do) experience performance anxiety. It's not as bad as it used to be but it's still there. As Brian says, it may never go away completely. As I hear a lot, "The only way you're going to get better at performing is by performing !". Anytime we step out of our comfort zone we are going to feel uncomfortable. As I my mentor and friend, Jeff McBride, just stated in a recent video, "Comfort zones are where dreams go to die". I know that I will not become better in the art of performing magic if I stay in my comfort zone. This applies to everything we want to become better at in life. So, let's don't forget to take a few slow, deep breaths (Or whatever method you use) to help calm our nerves and got out there and become awesome !

Dude...you're so great, there are just no words. The only other response to this question I've found in the magic community essentially boils down to, "get over it, I did." Thank you, thank you, thank you.

This is great advice not just for people preforming magic, but anyone from singers, rappers, athletes, dancers etc. Or just any activity/situation that can cause stress/anxiety!
Good job Brian Brushwood!

I'd like to thank Brian and everyone else at scam nation. You guys are so cool and your videos are always so great. I love watching you guys and I always learn some awesome stuff. Recently I have been working on a mini plasma cutter that has a handheld air compressor ( a portable tire inflator ) that will feed the air to the ionizing chamber where the air becomes hot and charged. I hope to make this the ultimate handheld pen sized high power plasma cutter. I originally thought about using a easier to heat gas and having it feed through fast enough to get a longer cutting range but I stuck with compressed air since I can use the portable air compressor anywhere without having a tank because it uses the air around it. If it works I will be able to create my next idea, handheld plasma cutter swords/daggers. If I can get the air to eject far enough and have it stay hot then I'll be able to make blades. So pretty much a realistic version of a light saber. If I do build this I would like to make you guys one since you are a major inspiration to me and I wish to thank you with a token of my appreciation. Plus I really wanna see Brian use it. It would be awesome to be a part of such an amazing group and I hope to meet up with you guys some day! (Probably in a bar! Lol!)

This might be better explained than some psychologist advice. Same advice for meetings, and interviews!

Success in life is the result of good judgement. Good judgement is usually the result of experience. And experience is usually the result of bad judgement.

When I was studying, we had a course that dealt with some of this stuff. Although it wasn't for magic. They explained how making use of the room, walking around, takes away some of the stress.

My problem isn't performing in front of others, it's actually booking gigs.
