The number one reason to go electric: Ask anyone that went electric if they would go back to an ICE vehicle. I know I would never return to lines at gas stations (see Costco); 3 hour waits at Toyota for an oil change; cost of gas; etc.

My reason for going electric are threefold: 1.) buying online versus at a traditional dealership and 2.) lower overall maintenance costs; no oil changes, no replacing fluids (coolant, transmission, etc.), no replacing belts or hoses, no replacing spark plugs and 3.) less time spent doing the first two.

I occasionally take a quick 300-400 mile round trip, which is the only time I use charge stations. For those trips, I charge up at home before leaving, and once at a charge station up to 80% before I return, spending a total of about $13 at the charge station. The cost of keeping charged at home is barely noticeable on my monthy electric bills.

Alex, good video as usual. This morning, I took my '99 Lexus SC 400 (with 205000 miles) in for an oil change. I've been going to the same mechanic for 20 years. My son drove me there in my '22 Mach-e, which is now approaching 9500 miles. I told my mechanic I'd need an oil change soon on the Mach-e. Not thinking, he looked up "oil change interval" on his computer, looked at me, smiled, and told me to get out. (He has a Model 3, in addition to his Lexus ES, so knows about electric cars.)

Alex, to be fair you should also do 5 ways EVs Test Your Patience(Charging stations, software glitches, premature tire usage, etc.) I made the switch 2 months ago(Polestar 2), main reason the insane gas prices here in Montreal(+$6/gallon) combined to some of the cheapest electric rates in North America = +$300/month net savings.

Almost every EV owner owned a gasser, we know what it is.
Someday will send a man to Uranus.
I bought a used EV 4-and-a-half years ago with NO gov $. 1 alignment, a little more on tires than I'm used to, still much cheaper than many big low profile tires. No other maintenance or repairs.

I drive a '20 Tesla MS (bought with TSLA that rocketed after a 1 for 5 split) and charge it using solar panels, EV TOU rates and net metering with lots of sunshine but the MS came with free Supercharging for the life of ownership. Since an SC station just opened up 2 blocks away I've started to charge there next nearest was 5 miles. Plugging in at home takes 5 seconds so no gas station hassels. My electric 'bill' last month was a $-44 that includes running a heat pump for heating/cooling, negative bills are nice, trust me. YMMV Btw, the Tesla is easily the best car I've ever driven, great fun and the free OTA software updates every 3-5 weeks keeps making the MS better as time goes on, incredible for this old guy.

The fact that the EV car he posted (to claim that EVs are a scam) is available in the market and that where he did the charging exists, his claim is valid and acceptable.

The real maintenance is costing me $1450 a year because that is the cost of replacing all the tyres at 30, 000 miles. Yea, I drive a lot in my VW ID.4, but at the same time I am saving over $6, 000 in gasoline. That is a big win in my book.

I priced up a connection for charging my car and the additional service run to the house (100 amps), the wiring, electrician, etc was nearly $3000. A level 2 charger is around $600. A VW Tiguan SE
MSRP starting at $30, 580 while the similar sized ID4 has a MSRP starting at $48, 995 (a nearly $20k difference). If electric was completely free, which its not, the tiguan would cost $2, 100 in fuel cost per year, add in $300 for oil change, and it would take of fuel saving to make up for the price difference for the car. The other cost that is not factored in is early tire replacement. EV's tend to need a new set (@$2300) around 30k or less, while and ICE car with a good set can go around 50-80k and the set cost 1/3 less.

My other car is a diesel which runs around 50mpg. I am not saying to not get an EV, but most people need to be aware at this point in time, the EVs on the market with the exception of say the Bolt are being sold as luxury cars not consumer cars. Unless you plan on keeping your car for more than 8 years or you drive more than 15k a year than an EV may work for you. I bought the ID4 and its great as a local car, but at the moment, bad for long distance, especially in winter where my trip from VA to NY is 2.5 hours longer because of the need to charge more because of the cold.

My recommendation for someone, is to look at CarMax or similar and buy a certified used if you want to see what living with one can be like especially if you don't have to pay the premium markup. Until there is like for like parody with ICE vs EV its cheaper to stay with ICE if you keep your cars less than 8 years.

Here in the UK I'm saving $230/month not buying gas! I drive roughly 12, 000 miles a year and fill up my model 3 on $0.1/kWh electricity at night. 🙂

I recently did a 320 mile trip with my 2023 Nissan Ariya cost me $7.20 to fully charge it at home. I have done the same exact trip with my Dodge Caravan a four-cylinder. It takes me a full tank of gas 20 gallons at $350 a gallon is 70 bucks.

Another great vid! The jokes but more importantly, not being a "fan boy" for either took shots at Tesla and switched to VW but still call out VW on software. Well done!!!

Nice video, I am waiting for the sub $30K w/ 300 mi range @ 70 mph :). My 12 yr old car is running well so until is dies I will retain it. Depending on the cost of EVs when it does, I'll probably buy one
