HOW TO DISABLE (or enable) ASIO INTERFACE FOR WINDOWS/PC SOUNDS

This video will show you how to disable your ASIO interface from being the Default Audio Device for Windows, and conversely, how to enable your ASIO interface to be the Default Audio Device for Windows.

I usually suggest that you keep your ASIO interface from being the default sound device for your computer. Meaning, you should only use the ASIO interface to hear sounds coming from your DAW, like Pro Tools, and use the integrated sound system for your PC sounds, like YouTube, SoundCloud, Windows Media Player, ect....

The reason for this is Windows can hold the ASIO driver hostage and prevent you from changing sample rates when creating a new Pro Tools session. This is because Windows needs a defined sample rate to playback audio, and if you are using the same interface/driver for your DAW, then it too will need a defined sample rate for your session, but since Windows has already defined it, you are stuck on the current sample rate.

This video will give you some ideas to try if your interface is not working properly for your DAW. I'm not saying you can't use your ASIO interface for Windows, but in my 9+ years of experience, it's usually best to avoid using your ASIO interface as the default audio device for Windows. There are other ways to use your ASIO device as your Windows sound device that cause less possible problems, such as routing a cable from your PC to an input of your interface.

Of course all ASIO interfaces are different and some ASIO drivers work better than others, but these are steps you will need to know if you are operating an ASIO interface on a Windows PC.

Good video! Quick question...

I have everything set up with pro tools to where I am finally getting audio to play (I had a helluva time going from mac to pc...)

I am using asio4all but I am running in to bad volume issues. The audio is so damn loud even though my volume control is down to "2". When I had pro tools 9 on my mac book I could easily play audio through the direct output with no issue. is there an easy fix for this?

Hi! Thank for this video. But how do you resolve using just the internal speakers and headphones without external speakers? I’m doing a technical college short course, purchased this software and have had issues. Most of the problems have been fixed by following your video, but I disabled all the speakers!

You could run your windows sounds out of your on board sound card and your eleven through a passive summing mixer into your monitors.

Cubase uses "Release ASIO Driver when in Background".
I actually to get LINE6 UX2 ASIO to play via PC sound. I think I can as it needs set within Cubase ASIO to reveal drop menu for IN/OUT.

Other useful sofrware is VB Voicemeter and Virtual Cable.

I never had problems like this on my E-MU Asio. I got Default speakers, HDMI nVidia out and asio on at the same time. I can also change the khz in real time.

But what my problem is, I want asio to play (linked to )WDM So that I can record Asio sounds with a desktop recorder or stream it with Twich.

Any 1 got an Idea?

All these downvotes for talking too fast (just play it at 0.9 speed!) and taking too long (FULLY EXPLAINED EVERYTHING I HAD QUESTIONS Seriously if you understand the basics of audio this video is NOT useless, it's GREAT. Helped me finish setting up Pro Tools on PC and explained a lot of the nuance that was previously a bunch of question marks in my mind. Troubleshooting blind is hard. Troubleshooting with well-explained info is not. Thank
Now rather than changing settings and landing on a solution by random chance, I know what changes to the settings matter and which do not. You rock man.

Thanks. I have a little problem: I can't watch Youtube videos while Protools is opened, even when I switch the audio interface to window's one. Have you ever encountered this kind of probem?

Thanks for sharing this solution. I have been searching for info. on disabling the system sounds while running ASIO in the DAW, and the results were always "How To Enable System Sounds for Streaming" which is not what I want when recording tracks. I had to alter the search prompt to say, "asio4all fl studio how to disable system sounds". Thanks a ton.

I don't really like using obs, it's a little lag and delay video and sound, because my laptop specs are low
