China Says Warships In Middle East Not Linked To Israel-Hamas War

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian on Thursday clarified the presence of six Chinese warships in the Middle East, stating that these vessels have nothing to do with the regional situation.

The statement was made in response to some media reports from the United States that six Chinese warships made a rare simultaneous appearance in the Middle East, amid the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict.

"As a matter of fact, these vessels constitute two Chinese naval task groups engaged in escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and waters off the coast of Somalia. They have nothing to do with the regional situation. We urge relevant parties to respect facts and refrain from unfounded speculation," said Wu at a press conference.

Forgive me if I don't take his word for it. China doesn't happen anywhere. They don't just show up without reason.

Ah yes the classic Chinese move “nothing to see here”. When in fact they are moving into strike positions.

China is making sure to be ready to choose a side if the conflict turns into a regional conflict and I'm sure Russia is also doing the same thing.

I'd say the comment is probably accurate enough insofar as the present conflict is concerned. Iran is a major supplier of oil to China and the shipping lanes from the Persian Gulf, all of the way to the South China Sea are as important for China as they are for any other power. I doubt the Chinese are there to shoot missiles bound for Iran down as the U.S. is doing with missiles launched toward Israel, but China is surely in the Persian Gulf or Strait of Hormuz to send a message that China has national securuty interests and in order to protect the supply of oil to China, as well as Chinese shipping to the region. It isn't directly due to the Israel and Hamas conflict. It is indirectly so. The Chinese statement is accurate enough.

Edit: It may be possible that China would consider any attacks upon Iranian oil facilities, ports, or upon any tankers destined for China to be an attack on China, itself. Possibly. They may be there to deter an attack on Iran, or a closing of the Straight of Hormuz. They're not there to fight any conflicts for Iran or for Hamas. There are there for their own national security reasons.
