There are 2 kinds of gum problems, that is gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is when you have reddish gums, that is it is swollen or would possibly bleed when you are brushing or eating fruits like apple or regular food or there could be bleeding in the morning. Periodontitis is a more severe form of gum problem where gums as well as bones are involved in the problem. So there are reddish gums, swollen gums, there is bleeding while brushing, also pain and swelling when you are chewing food or unexplained migration of the teeth from one place to another. So suddenly you may develop space in between the teeth. So this is a sign of periodontitis. How do you treat gingivitis and periodontitis? It is quite different from each other. Consult from a dental surgeon. A periodontitis and a gingivitis is attended by a periodontist that is a gum surgeon. So he evaluates your gums whether it is a gingivitis or a periodontitis. So a general cleaning every 6 months is mandatory to avoid any of these diseases. Especially in gingivitis there are local and systemic factors that are involved. What are local factors? That is like accumulation of food, tartar, plaque inside the mouth. Systemic factors like diabetes, hormonal imbalance, blood disorders can have reflection of these diseases in the gums causing gingivitis or periodontitis. So get checked by a dentist. Bad breath is one of the symptoms of periodontitis due to accumulation of large amount of bacteria in the mouth and it is very unpleasant. This in medical term is called halitosis. Halitosis can cause inconvenience, embarrassment. So it is important to attend to halitosis. This can be resolved with simple cleaning or with medications or extensive treatment to avoid such problems in the mouth.
