Explore the amazing science behind neutron star collisions that create black holes and birth heavy elements like gold and silver! We’ll take you through the process of how these cosmic collisions lead to kilonovas — massive explosions that illuminate the universe. Learn how the Hubble Telescope helped scientists witness this stellar event and discover the origins of some of the heaviest elements. Join us on this incredible journey!

There are a few interesting details about this event. The gravitational waves got here first, followed a few seconds behind by the gamma rays, detected by different observatories. An alert went out, and telescopes all over the world trained on the spot in the sky, and got their data some hours later. With that, we entered a new era of multi-messenger astronomy.

If you look at matter as occupying space then when matter collapses into a black hole it loses all internal space to create more space in the exterior. That's my thought on it anyway since the volume of space contained within an object is determined by the area of it's boundaries and as space doesn't have an exterior boundary it must have an internal boundary by which it's volume can be calculated as expanding. Black holes are the edge or boundary of space and time beyond which they don't exist.

Do they really “collide “ or just slowly mesh?

I wonder what would happen if 2 neutron stars that about to kill novas fall into black hole, at the moment of

About a teaspoon full would weigh about the same as a mountain! Now we're getting precise. Why can't it be a cubic centimeter and a closer estimate in metric tons? Give me some confidence that we even have a clue.

This is what it's like when neutron stars collide!
Are you rdy to go, 'cus I'm rdy to go!

Why do you use Wikipedia and not nasas or scientific reports;

Thanks heaps for all your hard efforts and research but I think neutron stars, aren't dead

My hypothesis: inside a black hole, is neutron degeneracy, where 3 quark structures, bosons, can't exist. To cramp & dense from the gravity. Also that would "confuse" the gluons, so that they only can keep 2 quark structures, like mesons together. Also could just be "quark soup". Photons can't escape because they are continually getting bounced between quark structures like a pin ball machine. It's too cramp and dense to escape.

I really do like this channel, but I disagree completely with the statement that neutron stars fall into each other by losing energy through gravitational waves. Gravitational waves are an effect, they are space-time compression oscillations, they aren’t energy or materials that things give off or lose. We can’t compare these behaviors to how objects lose energy via the radiation of light, or the production of sound, or friction, etc..

Sorry but VIRGO did not detect the first official gravitational waves. It was not operating yet.

What was really loud, was the time uranus exploded.

If true, this is big..looking islands of stability, ...we could gamble...make a chart - pick a number of neutrons ...guess the color of the new elements., get a Nobel prize

Can the wrong pronunciation of words be edited and corrected? My guess is someone that doesn't know already how a word is pronounced will look like a dummy (ytrium is pronounced yit' not y)when or if they try to convey the knowledge they think they learned to someone else.

I hate how these videos constantly reuse the same graphics. It feels lazy. PBS SpaceTime is much better.

While neutron star mergers surely create heavy elements, the heavy elements we find on Earth were created when God spoke the Earth into existence. The stars were spoken into existence four days later.

The Earth was created to be inhabited, just as the set for a play is constructed for the play to be acted out on. God has written a most grand drama.
