9/11 Memorial | South Tower Pool | World Trade Center | New York City

Located on eight acres of the 16-acre World Trade Center complex, the 9/11 Memorial is a place of remembrance and contemplation within the bustle of lower Manhattan.

The focal points of the Memorial are two pools, each nearly an acre in size, that sit in the footprints of the former North and South Towers. The pools contain the largest manmade waterfalls in North America, each descending 30 feet into a square basin. From there, the water in each pool drops another 20 feet and disappears into a smaller, central void.

According to the architect, Michael Arad, the pools represent “absence made visible.” Although water flows into the voids, they can never be filled. The sound of the cascading water makes the pools a place of tranquility and contemplation separate from the bustling noises of the city.

My dad and I were there when it happened. I'll never forget the sound of the 2nd plane revving over our car and then the crash.

Them pools really show how huge that complex was, they were just 2 towers, bit there was 5 other buildings, the PATH, a shopping centre, and 5 underground levels in that

I watched the coolest documentary last night about the memorial pools. They are cleaned five days a week. It takes an eight hour shift for two men to vacuum out the pools. They clean the debris at the bottom all the litter that people throw in the water. They also shine the plaques every night. They have a really cool burning method of getting those plaques to buff out and shine. People will carve horrible things by some of the victims names. That on its own can take hours to clean one carving. If you’re not gonna go to pay your respects or admire the beauty, please do not deface these beautiful memorials.

Taking selfies is disrespect. I was recently in NYC with my girlfriend and we visited the memorial pools and museum, something we both wanted to see. This is sacred ground, a cemetery. Honor and respect those lives lost. Keep your distance if you see mourners there paying respects. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum should be on everyone's bucket list. The smaller, center square is "the void", water flows down to the foundation of the twin tower. it was designed so whatever angle you're standing, at the pool, you can't see the bottom. Many were visibly weeping here. Very moving memorial.

I resently visited this memorial and the museum. It was so sad. I did not experience this in real time bit it must have been very tromatizing. I even saw a name of a lady and her unborn child😢. I dont want to get into this to much but my father was visiting new york on a work trip and unfprtanoly went missing😢. Anyways anyone who went missing or passed in this terris attak I am so sorry for you.
