Super interesting how just changing the direction of the lunge changes the engaged areas. Same thing here - if you aren’t feeling the proper engagement engage the primary muscle group before stepping forward or stepping back to train your brain to engage the proper muscle through the movement. Keep these videos coming brother.

It's not the direction of the lunge that changes the primary muscle engaged but the tilt of your torso. Quads=upright, hamstrings=forward tilt

For anyone looking to switch up their workouts, incorporating both front and reverse lunges is a solid idea. Keeps things interesting.

Some Tips for anyone interested. Always do twice as many on your lesser strength lunge than your stronger lunge. Its easy to figure out, try 3 of each alt legs lunges and see which is harder. Thats obviously your lesser strength so double down on those. Use DBs and variations with plate or barbell front rack or back rack or Overhead barbell the hardest of all. Try sandbag walking or in position lunges, ect. Walking lunges are harder than just standing lunges. However, doing standing step forward or step back lunges as depicted in clip will give you great practice for the stability you need in a walking lunge. The %'s shown in clip will vary depending on your personal strengths. 70/30 is not the same for all. This has been my experience.

I have a question: when I do front lunges, my right knee is sore and weak . My left knee is good. (I do not have any injuries at my knees. ) How can I help about it? Thank u! I stick to reverse lunges. Less worries of triggering overuse/tendonitis/jumpers knee

The difference is not in the direction of movement but in the angle of the torso movement and the angle of the knee.
