Somatic Experiencing is rooted in biological survival physiology which itself is backed up by the latests research and understanding in the field of neuroscience, biology and psychology. It is well documented, and has been my professional experience, that treatment leaves clients feeling more alive, more in control of their futures, more resilient in the face of new stressors and importantly no longer haunted by the emotional scars of their trauma.

*Please note* Please keep your comments to the topic of SE and trauma treatment. I will be deleting any new comments about animals experiencing PTSD because this has been addressed at great length in other comments. Please read those already there and if you have anything to add that hasn't already been said, you can do that within those existing comments.

Thank you so much for this. I lost my 43 year old finance to COVID going on 4 years in April and that still feels completely insane to say.

I am proud of myself for how much I’ve overcome and spiritually realize grief is just love with “nowhere to go”, I initiated a non profit in my Sweet Sam’s honor. It has been a labor of love but I have to be honest with myself and admit I have NOT fully accepted or confronted that he is no longer a part this earthly incarnation experience for me and that inadvertently remaining stagnant in my mind, heart and soul…quite literally like emotionally I’m trying to stay as close to the last memories I had of him as I can and it is eating me alive.

I was diagnosed with heart failure a year and a half after he passed and as a nurse I found out firsthand how very, VERY real broken heart syndrome is. The body truly does keep the score. And I know better, logically and spiritually that he is just fine and he’s want no additional heartache and pain for me so I also have the conundrum of feeling like I’m somehow letting him down by still being stuck at this point in my grief walk and honestly not wanting to move and it translates to moving on without him in my grief-ridden brain.

I feel so lost, I thought I was doing better …but much like anything else in this life dualistically I realize that the depth of my pain matches the depth of the love I have / had for him and instead of running from that I need to learn to sit with it and process it and I feel this will be greatly beneficial for me so I want to say thank you for explaining this in such a succinct, meaningful way. Bless you for the obvious calling, gifts and purpose you’ve been bestowed….much like most healthcare practitioners, our desire to help others heal is in direct correlation to our own pain and internal traumas so I want to salute you for being such a tenacious, loving soul that is willing to repurpose their heartache into healing for a potentially global audience / community. It is truly an inspiration to see how even 60 seconds of selflessness can radiate life, hope and joy onto those who need it most.

Thank you. 🤍🙏🏽✨

Can you enlighten about what is the name after the suggestion under for the stuck energy in the traumatic process rather than fight or flight, I want to study that concept but I can't find the name for it even it is the central topic

I rehabilitate wildlife and I have to disagree with you that animals do not experience ptsd.

Wild animals live in a constant hypervigilant and paranoid state of existence. They are always expecting something to harm them. When it isn't other animals, its us. When you help them overcome trauma (physical) and gain their trust the animal feels safe in its environment and it can relax it is still going to startle and get up in the middle of the night an even panic...I've been physically injured multiple times by wild animals and the injury ALWAYS was a reaction to being afraid and defensive. Orphaned wildlife that could not be released and has never had to experience one ounce of fear in their lives, this is what we know as habituation. This is a fancy term for not being cut out for life in the wild due to the lack of fear and hyper vigilance. They animals (ironically enough) aren't traumatized and cautious *enough*.

If we release a mentally healthy animal into the wild, it will die.

We can't set some free for not feeling threatened/afraid or paranoid enough in their environment. We have to isolate them from human contact and make them sleep outdoors and slowly try to help them adjust while only seeing them to feed and water them. Most times they will instinctively start feeling the appropriate level of fear and they have to do a crash course and start treating the person who healed them as an invader to be afraid of. We cant let them go until they're traumatized enough. It really put trauma into a perspective how we something that happens to us that helps us survive as a maladaptive problem instead of a necessary evil of surviving a traumatic event or a traumatic lifestyle. It just goes to show you how resilient people and animals are and how similar we both are. The difference is we view paranoia and hypervigilance as something that is totally rational for an animal in the wild, yet find people who exhibit the same behaviors irrational and mentally ill. All wildlife is mentally ill, they just never have an opportunity to relax somewhere safely for about 6 months unless they're in our care and you'll see some very interesting symptoms. They live and die in the wild never having the chance to heal or process their trauma.

Similarly, even animals that are domesticated experience and respond to trauma very similarly to a wild animal showing aggressive and avoidant tendencies. Military Working Dogs are great examples as well as the animals in the shelters kill list. They have PTSD. The aggression is fear based. It always is. These issues are just as hard to work through with an animal as people dealing with PTSD. I would say with animals you have a language barrier but they still get it.

I have PTSD. The physiological responses are not the only responses I would need help with. 9/10, for me working through the situation logically helps me not be triggered. I would say working with wild animals helped me understand and be patient with and heal myself. Living in a constant state of fear and paranoia seems like a rational and safe way to help a wild animal survive. You don't see the PTSD stuff pop up until they're safe and just sunk their teeth into your arm because you moved funny. We see their fear and paranoia as rational unless they're domesticated or habituated you'll never see anything qualifying as involuntary reactions to fit the label of ptsd.

It's definitely there though. We are not so different. ❤

Sounds good. For me as a non-native English speaker the Speed is to fast. So 120 secs would have been good as well :)

My nervous system went into fight and flight watching this. This type of information is important and helpful - especially for those of us in need of it - but it needs to be conveyed in a digestible manner rather than in a stressful one.
