It is mesmerizing how repairability had gone down over the years

2050: the glue is paired to the phone

God it’s so frustrating how the insides of the current iPhones work. They’re super modular and THEORETICALLY easy to swap parts out, but then reality sets in with proprietary screws, the AMOUNT of screws, software locks, etc so actually getting to the parts and getting them out is a hassle

I like how you’re doing something that no other YouTuber has EVER done before, tearing down two iPhones from COMPLETELY different eras, this’ll be DEFINITELY worth watching for anyone, IMO. Nice content as always, Hugh!! 😇👍🏻😉

I know there’d be a lot of differences, but seeing how relatively familiar the outside of the devices are it’s crazy how completely different they are inside. 🤯

Nice restoration of the iPhone 2G! The older devices are designed to be repaired easier, unlike the newer models which are deliberately designed to be more of a pain, whether it be through hardware (needing to heat up a glued on display/back cover, proprietary security screws, and glued in batteries) or through software (software locks that throw up warnings or break functionality even when using genuine parts).
The only part I don't like about the iPhone 2G is the soldered battery, and the fact that it is 2G only, not having even 3G...

That was an awesome little walkthrough on how to disassemble and reassemble both phones. Thx. Love your work and videos. Every time I see you doing this makes me wanna take apart my phones.

The 1st gen could record video, the limitation was just software based. I remember jailbreaking my phone and being able to record video

5:40 Re: Battery tab broke right where it turns. This implies that you remove the right side first to make space, then when you pull on the left one, which has the bend, you need to change the direction of the pulling force midway through the pull. You'll have to estimate when the pull tab has reached the turn, then move your hand towards the right to keep the pulling force aligned with the tab direction (the line of contact, where it is being unstuck). By this method, which will involve skill (i.e. timing the turn), and initially luck, perhaps the left side tab can be removed without it breaking. In summary, keep the force aligned with the tab (i.e. perpendicular to the line of contact where it is being unstuck).

Dimes to dollars, Apple did all this on purpose. Horrific...

Great restoration of the 2G! I just wanted to mention that if you wanted a battery that is more similar to the original capacity of that phone you can always get a Huawei HB5K1H Battery (1400mAh), fits perfectly, just gotta route the wires right over the battery, worked great in my restoration when I had difficulty finding a good replacement battery. I have quite a few pictures as well. Hope you may find this useful!!
