How to Shift Quicker Using a Strain Gauge - Jay's Tech Tips #34 - Real Street Performance

We get a lot of questions about how we get our transmissions to shift fast in the drag cars, and how to carry power into the next gear without it dropping off in the gear change.

We accomplish this using sensors to tell the ECU when a gear change is starting to happen. Then the ecu either retards the ignition timing, or cuts the ignition all together. This slows the engine down during the gear shift and allows the transmission gears to line up easier, allowing a quicker gear change.

There are different ways to accomplish this depending on what type of transmission you have. In today's tech tip we will go over these different methods, and how you can use them to make quicker, more consistent, and safer shifts.

I would also add a switch either on the gear lever itself or steering wheel to engage/disengage the strain guage ignition cut system for a street car.

i was thinking of trying one of these in my (700-800whp) integra for drag racing. how is it on synchronised transmission? would you say if its setup properly is it harder/ easier or the same on transmissions and by how much? as far as breaking parts?

Do you have a suggestion on a Strain Gauge for road racing that does not cost an arm and a leg ? or better still does RSP sell one?

I've got a 80/20 street car and weekend drag car. It's a mild fox body mustang with a t5 w/gforce gearset (cable clutch) would I need to convert to a hydraulic clutch? Or would would it be out of the question since it's not a dedicated drag car
