Welcome to lecture 10 of Math 205 JW - Elements of Calculus.

In this lecture we start out by giving some general tips about how to approach studying for this class. We then jump back into talking about derivatives.

We recall some important facts about derivatives, then talk about the second derivative (the derivative of the derivative). We talk about the interpretations of the second derivative and what information it can give us. We then summarize, in a table, the info we can get from the original function given, its first derivative and its second derivative and how we can figure out this info.

We then start developing derivative formulas. Computing the derivative from the limit definition can be cumbersome. Luckily for us, certain functions behave nicely enough so that we can figure out their derivatives without going through the definition, but rather by using a formula. We derive one of the most basic formulas for doing this--the power rule. This is the rule used to differentiate power functions (terms of a polynomial). We do a few examples and end class there.

We will talk about more formulas, and some properties of derivatives in our next class--which, due to holidays, will be a week and a half from now.

You mentioned a review during the beginning, and although I am not in your class I was wondering if I can also use your review as practice for my class?

I really like your way of teaching. You explain the theory behind the concept and that helps me to understand. I am taking calc 1 and I don't even log onto my professor's lectures. I just follow the schedule and watch your videos. Awesome job!
