What Will Happen To Earth If Jupiter Turns Into a Star?

Our starry sky deceives us. Four out of five stars you see from Earth are, in fact, binary star systems. There are also triple systems, but binary ones are the most common in the Universe. So, in theory, Earth had a better chance of ending up in a binary solar system. However, it's infrequent that such systems have planets, and it's pretty dangerous to live in an unstable world like this. But what if we try? In this video, you’ll find out: how can we turn our Jupiter into a star? If we do, will it bring unbearable heat or, instead, permafrost to Earth? And will we manage to survive if a star appears in the Sun’s orbit?

Riddle was transported back to his adolescent years by a powerful black hole.

Jupiter cannot and will not spontaneously become a star, but if a minimum of 13 extra Jupiter-mass objects happen to collide with it, there is a chance it will.

It’s insane how perfect our conditions are and have to be in order to sustain life.

when you think about it we are so damn lucky that we exist, only 1 star in our solar system, the distance is close enough to the sun, we have water in our planet, we have high chance of avoiding asteroids. So many lucky factors playing here no wonder its so damn hard to find another planet with a possible another life.

So this video is not about "what if Jupiter turned into a star" but more about what if we instantly replaced Jupiter with something else. Completely different scenario.

jupiter is almost 5x further away than the sun is in relation to earth so that wouldn't really have an effect most likely other than having a bright day side and a dim day side imo.

Read 2010 Odyssey by Arthur C Clarke.

Jupiter was turned into a star to develop life on Europa. Earth didn't suffer too much.

If Jupiter became a Red Dwarf(smallest star) Gravitationally nothing would change, seriously... Maybe some of the asteroids between Jupiter and Mars would be flung towards the inner planets but thats it(yes that could potentially destroy Earth considering some of the asteroid sizes).

We'd have a barely noticeable increase in night time brightness and occasionally we'd see a second star in our day sky.

Temperature wise, we would not notice any changes. So no, the temperatures would not rise.

So all in all, if Jupiter became the only star it could feasibly become for whatever reasons(Red Dwarf): the planets would stay in their orbits, Jupiters moons would have slightly larger orbits and some of them could even become habitable, and Earth would remain the same(granted no asteroids collided with it during the initial process of Jupiter becoming said star).

the sun mass is the equivalent of 99% of the solar system mass so good luck achieving it

Luke Skywalker's home planet revolved around two suns so yeah, life is possible.

I'd like to name the 4 stars: 1. "Solius". 2. "Boosfer". 3. "Tooboot". 4. "Allius".

It's true incredible how beautiful Earth is. do we really even know how lucky we are

I'd love to see an animation showing what earth would like from the surface as it got sucked by a black hole, how long would the whole process take? a year? a hundred years?

That last star system makes me think of that crazy multi star cluster described in Firefly and that even had a number of companion stars...

You know it's astrophysics when the topic ends up back in Uranus.

The title should be "What would happen to Earth if Jupiter turned into a star?"

As this will very likely not happen this is purely theoretical. We would need about 80 more Jupiters....
