In this episode, we look at sanctions on Russia and its impact on India. Since February 21, when Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the recognition of sovereignty of two Ukraine states and February 24, when he announced military operations on Ukraine, a number of countries have announced a massive list of sanctions against Russia, aimed at “isolating” the Russian economy and cutting off their financial connections entirely.

Will Republicans follow current US policy towards Russia if their candidate gets elected as President?? There are many Putin 'fans' in GOP that are actually supporting Putin openly

My take on sanctions against Russia.

That is a traditional approach - which is guided by certain facts that are missing in the case of Russia.

1. Russia is current account Surplus. That means on the P&L accouny it was making profits. Hence has built significant reserves.

2. It is energy Surplus. That means energy prices are not impacting.

3. Rouble depreciation means that its imports get costly. Its import basket is essentially industrial goods. Hence does not imapvt consumer prices.

3. Every currency trade requires settlement in Roubles too. That impact is perhaps missing in the assessment.

4. The prices of Rouble and Oil both are speculative trades. That means contracts are being set off and not settled in the traded commodity. This can result in very odd situations. For example in 2019 we saw negative prices in WTI trade of crude oil. That means the seller was paying to the buyer to take his inventory.

5. The world order is changing with Russia China trade cooperation

When US invaded Libya, Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan, how comes no European countries stood up and sanctioned US, wasn’t it a double standards? When it came to Russia, the EU was quick to jump into the bandwagon with US to sanction Russia. Hope when all these are over, Russia must never forget and forgive the EU countries which colluded with US.

USA and EU /NATO are very serious about the sanctions and there are no exceptions or excuses.
Either we have friends or not!
Despots dictators and strong men are going to be easily distinguished from the democratic leaders.
India can help Russia and be left behind with China as the Russians winning friends !
There are nothing more important than friends in critical national security issues. Make good choices.
