I kind of feel like Elon's problem with OpenAI is sour grapes. Its one thing on being a non-profit or not, honestly I don't care, seems like a gotcha kind of thing, a technicality Elon is trying to use to shut them down. As for telling investors you can't invest in other companies, it's a free country, if they say hey we will take your money, but the contract says if you invest in our competitor, we will give you your money back and it cancels the deal. If you don't like that deal, then don't invest. End of story. You can invest in all of them if you want, but you may lose your investment in one of them because that is the deal you agreed to. Nobody is being forced to invest in OpenAI, there are a billion places to put money. As for Microsoft getting info, what the hell did they pump a billion dollars into this thing for, charity? Of course they can get their hands on info, they fcking paid for it, and rightfully so. OpenAI and Microsoft have got the world by the b*lls, they know it, its legal, and the other powers don't like it. They played the game and won, so either invent your own or pony up.

Many models have gone independent of OpenAi. I've been coding for the past year without any product from OpenAi. So it's not really going to affect my project directly.

All they would need to do is spin the commercial products out as a brand new for-profit. Keep the research in OpenAI. And Altman has the right to decide not to buy training data from X. It's up to OpenAI's board to decide from whom to buy. As for blocking investments in competitive companies, it's up to the investor to agree to or refuse the terms. Does Elon want to become an industry regulator? Something he ostensibly opposes?

Elon's tactics are really low. The details of the correspondence clearly show that he intended to incorporate OpenAI into Tesla as a resource for his autonomous driving, and after being rejected, he left in anger. Yet, he claims it was because he wanted to maintain non-profit status. I really think that using legal means to target competitors is a very twisted mindset.

This guy is a piece of work. He may as well be an actual woman – pay attention to what he does, not what he says.

just out the gate, I would say that no one company or mega millionaire/billionaire should have a monopoly on AI. That being said there should be guardrails to make sure AI is going in the right direction that is most beneficial to humanity and not just profits.
