I work in the supplements field and here's a quick explanation on why it work's well for quite a few people:
Magnesium; the magnesium itself helps muscles relax when the dose is smaller (100-400mg), which in return greatly helps against tension headaches and any sort of physical stress you felt during the day. Of course this is going to help you physically relax before bed. On top of that, magnesium is a very common deficiency that worsens Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, Bipolar and Anorexia symptoms (especially when paired with other deficiencies).
Glycinate; also known as Glycine is an essential ameno acid which is also one of the primary component in collagen. Glycine itself has been shown to help serotonin production in small quantities which is necessary for good sleep, it helps the brain enter it's REM stage much more quickly which in return should make sleep quality much better.

Extra info; Magnesium Glycinate itself is very easily absorbed and has a bioavailability comparable to Magnesium Citrate. Magnesium Citrate is a little acidic and can be a little harsher on the stomach for some people, but it's also why it's a perfect laxative when taken at higher doses (400-800mg). This is why magnesium Glycinate (or Bisglycinate as the proper term) is usually the preferred magnesium supplement as it's much gentler on the stomach but can still be used as a laxative as well. Now please don't take any of my dose ranges as seriously as you should, everyone's body handles supplements differently. For some people 200mg is enough meanwhile 400mg causes a laxative effect, always monitor yourself when taking anything above recommended dosage on labels.
