"I'm afraid I might poop while giving birth!" *drinks castor oil*

Had a friend try it, she said she had explosive diarrhea and she didn’t go into labor until a week later

I did it. Didn’t realize it was a laxative. It said to not exceed 4 tbsp in a 24 hr period so I took 4-5 table spoons in one sitting. They didn’t think I was in labor because of it. The contractions and diarrhea were god awful. I went from 3cm-10cm in 45 minutes. Thankfully I was literally pooped out by then, but because of all this I did not get to get the epidural. The most intense 5 hours of my life. Colon cleanse didn’t begin to describe it. I’m just glad I ended up having my baby but it’s an experience that too many know about and will never forget.

Oh my word. I always considered the poop factor, but explosive diarrhea? 😳

I was already anxious about pooping during delivery. Can not envision willfully inviting diarrhea during labour 😅

It does work, if the cervix is ripe, and the best reason to use it is that in the right situation, it starts natural labor, avoiding the need for the pitocin nightmare!

The stomach cramps and diarrhea were awful - but only for about an hour, then they stopped and we went right into labor - and a drug free natural birth, within 3-4 hours! It worked twice for me, when my water broke, but I was not in labor. Our CNM told me I had two choices - go eat an easily digestible high protein meal, take a bap, then drink my mineral oil and have the baby today at the birth center; or go home and check into the hospital for a pitocin drip in the morning. Same exact thing with both my second and third babies. Both times, we opted for food / nap / mineral oil, and both times were glad that we did!

This worked to start labor in NINETY PERCENT of their patients who needed to be induced. It is NOT an old wives tale - the intestinal cramping can stimulate labor, if the cervix is ready.

And no, I did not poo my pants nor the bed with either of them. One miserable hour in the bathroom, and I was cleaned out, and in hard labor! I would do it again in a heartbeat!❤

As a nurse, I know very well the maternity nurse saying: “Get your pit (Pitocin); get your epidural; get your c-section!”

Thankful that we have those options when needed - but normalizing them is harmful!

I'm old enough to remember when an enema was mandatory while you were in labor. Five years later I went in (my second child) dreading the "enema" only to discover they finally realized enough babies dropped into toilets to stop that ridiculous idea.

My granny's 1st baby back in 1946 they had her do this and jump over a chair 👀 to try and induce labor. Yeah...she had horror stories til the day she passed.

My midwife had me drink castor oil when I was 2 weeks late with my second. And we were trying many things all that wants to try to induce labor. If my baby wasn't born that night I would have been sent to a hospital. And I can say for a fact I will never have castor oil again because that was a nightmare of an experience. But at least I didn't poop during delivery

Yep, I'm guilty of doing this with baby #2. 10 days late, military dr would not induce until day 14 (we were moving on day 14 to another state). I only took about 1 tbsp at midnight. No bad diarrhea, but did go into labor. Baby #2 was born just before 2pm. Still moved to another state a few days later with a newborn and 2 yr old. Ah, to be young again! 😆

With my little brother, my mom KNEW something was wrong (I'd say it was mother's intuition, but it was a bit more complicated). Her doctor just told her it was end of pregnancy jitters (it was her 3rd kid, and she was an ER nurse, so no). So, instead of castor oil, Mom just walked a bunch. She and I would walk a couple miles every day to the Chinese place she liked, until finally she went into labor a week early. Thank God she did because my brother's umbilical cord was in a hard knot. The delivery room went SILENT when it came out. Turns out, it was the same reason that my great grandma had a stillbirth with her youngest child. Her doctor apologized(luckily they were also good friends).

Also I think sometimes people underestimate how desparate some people get to get the baby out 😂😂😂 at 8 days overdue I was ready to do just about anything… I literally begged my midwife to break my waters during my antenatal visit 😂 I laugh now but I was so freaking uncomfortable

Is there any research about what ACTUALLY triggers labor? Like is there a hormone the baby suddenly gives off when its body is done gestating or something? Is there research on this??

I did it. It worked. I had Ulcerative Colitis, and frankly couldn't tell the difference between that and Castor Oil. I ended up laboring in my bathroom and shower for many hours before I realized the cramps weren't UC cramps, got to the birthing center 2 hours before birth. I think it sped it up, it was 9 hours max from drinkinv it to finish, no prior children. So, there's that.

I tried. It wasn’t so bad. But didn’t work for me 🤷‍♀️
Then again when I had a hospital induction, that didn’t work for me either, and I ended up with a c-section.
So to me, the castor oil is worth the try. It does work for a lot of people. Diarrhea isn’t the worst thing that can happen to a person. It took me nearly a year to feel like I was back to normal after my c-section tho. Not giving medical advice, just sharing my feelings based on experiences. Some people don’t mind getting cut open. Maybe they have a good supportive family who will drop everything and take good care of them for a while. I don’t feel I have anyone to take care of me like that.

Yep, I'm 38 weeks pregnant and desperate to get things moving but castor oil is one I will not even consider! I'll try other natural induction methods, (knowing full well that they won't do a thing until my body and baby decide they're ready to get this show on the road 😂) but castor oil is not on the list of options or anywhere close!

My husband brought me flowers (that died because we forgot about them), made dinner and hung pictures that I'd been asking him to do for a while. My waters broke an hour later.

What do you think about the midwives brew? It is said to be a concoction that prevents those horrible side effects but is still almost 80 percent effective at inducing labor without medication.

I’m really curious to hear your thoughts on this and it’s becoming more and more popular on the interwebs

I tried it with my first daughter when I was 20 and didn’t know better. Was awful and horrible stomach cramps but didn’t put me into labor. 0/10 would not recommend
