005 - Electron Configuration

In this video Paul Andersen explains how to write out the electron configuration for atoms on the periodic table. More importantly he shows you why electrons arrange themselves in shells, subshells and orbitals by using Coulomb's law and studying the first ionization energies of different atoms.

ANSWERS:
Cl - [Ne] 3s^2 3p^5
Ag - [Kr] 4d^10 5s^1 - Did you get [Kr] 5s^2 4d^9? There are a few exceptions to this law. Most of them are found in the f-block metals and they are not of much chemical significance.

I couldn't understand quantum numbers in high school for the life of me. I actually dropped out of the chemistry course because of it. The way it is explained here it's actually pretty simple. I'm 66 and retired and I'm trying to convince myself that can understand and learn chemistry, it's sort of an unresolved thing with me. We never had tutorials like this back in the day. You only had one teacher and if that teacher was not up to snuff then you were beat. Thanks a million Paul!

Literally have been learning this for 2 weeks in my chemistry class. And I had no idea what was going on, but I watch your video and it all makes sense now, thank you

why do professors suck so much at teaching? this guy explained this in 10 minutes and is so clear...

That arrow chart shit is the dopest thing I've seen. I've never been able to memorize orbitals and shit, and this made is super easy. Thanks mate.

I'm in a college chem class and it has been 5 years since I took chemistry, so i remember nothing from high school. My professor is a wonderful person but a very ineffective teacher. This 10 minute video taught me what a 1hr 50min lecture could not. Thank you so much.

I have a chemistry final tomorrow. Everyone please pray for me. I’m serious. I’ve cried for nights because of this subject.

Wow, as a STEM student, I find myself searching for Chemistry, Physics, and Biology videos on youtube on a daily basis. This is quickly becoming my favorite channel! Thank you so much for everything!

You’re the most well-informed and student-forced instructor/teacher that I’ve ever listened on YouTube. You teach both core points of subject and general expectations as answers of questions. I really learned lots of things about chemistry. I wish you the best, sir. Thanks for these videos :) Take care!

WHY CANT MY TEACHER JUST PLAY THIS INSTEAD OF CONFUSING EVERYONE?

I'm a high school teacher and this video explains configuration much better than I can. I pause to add details and link to what we've already learned and ask questions, but having the images and charts with the explanation is a great help.

You're a goddamn life-saver. I have a test coming up for this and the teacher I have is absolutely terrible at explaining this stuff. You managed to clearly explain it in ten minutes.

I looked deeper into it and it was explained that it takes less energy to keep two shells half full then keeping one filled and the other less then half full. That makes sense but that means you can't just blindly follow the arrows in your diagram and figure out any element. YOU NEED TO PUT THAT IN YOUR VIDEO, OTHERWISE PEOPLE WILL BE MAKING MISTAKES WITHOUT KNOWING IT.

Always! Mr. Andersen, you do a excellent job at explaining the phenomenon. There is a reason you were a presidential award winner for Teacher of the Year. I see many students who are so grateful for your video's. Teachers are as well. You do a great job in teaching the teacher how to instruction. Thank you for the example you set for us.

I spent like four hours trying to understand this last week, couldn't get anything. Ten minutes here and I understand everything. Stay cool, Paul Andersen

I was horribly lost in my chemistry class! Now not so much I don't know why I didn't understand this with my teacher... it really put my confidence in the class down but now I feel like I have some hope! Thank you much!
