Chinese Z-10 attack helicopter units started latest training flights early in 2022. And Pakistan is very likely to place order.
The Z10ME export model is an advanced improvement of Z-10 helicopter, a 6-ton dedicated ground-attack platform.
Z-10 is a day/night combat helicopter, it can also carry TY-90 air-to-air missiles to counter enemy helicopters and low-flying fighters.
The Z-10ME can carry a variety of weapons, such as Blue Arrow 7 anti-tank missiles, a variant of Chinese AKD-10.
In early Jan 2022, it is reported that Pakistan cancelled Turkish T-129 helicopter contract and will switch to Z-10ME.
At the time, media reported the Director-General of Inter-Services PR of the Pakistani Army confirmed the cancellation.
But soon the Army denied such report, and indicated the Turkish deal is still on. T-129 beat Z-10ME in earlier competition.
In China, Z-10 usually work with Z-19 scout helicopter, Z-8 and Z-20 transport helicopter to carry out air-assault missions. And Pakistan would like to replicate a similar system, starting with importing an advanced 6-ton attack helicopter.
Even though Z-10ME presents many advantages, there is a major concern the engine is not at the same level as T-129. T-129 is powered by engine from Rolls Royce and Honeywell. Similar Chinese turboshaft engines entered service recently. Therefore, Z-10ME might not be the most reliable choice. However Z-10ME is the choice of less external interference. For Pakistan Army, there is a real threat that western countries might block the engine deal, collapsing T-129 project.
Overall Z-10ME is still a very competitive option for Pakistan Army, and it might become the eventual winner beating T-129. The mass production of Z-10 attack helicopter and continuing improvement could alter the decision of Pakistan Army.
