Most combat aircraft are planes with guns attached. The A-10 is guns with a plane attached.

Little known fact. The A-10 Thunderbolt was named after the P-47 Thunderbolt, which also developed a reputation for basically being a flying tank

I'm an A-10 technician and work on these everyday. The issue is that since we are no longer fighting in the middle east, the A-10 is no longer assigned a mission. The Air Force has also unfortunately been trying for years to get rid of it to free up money to continue modernizing the F-35 which will eventually replace the A-10 even though it has nowhere near the same capability. The Air Force has done this in the form of cutting contracts that make A-10 parts. When parts go bad, there's very little to go around now so it's become increasingly harder and harder to maintain them. Some of them are just being sent to the boneyard because they need new wings but we don't have any more wings to replace them. If I had to guess, all of these will be gone by 2030. They're slowly getting retired one by one.

4:25 The gau auto cannon is actually mounted off center, but the firing position of the gau is center line. It is also angled downwards so it can fire at ground targets while flying level to the horizon.

I've heard countless war stories from my buddies on how this single machine has saved their a. A few buddies 2nd deployments, when they had the A-10 come support, enemy would completely disengage and run. Guys were absolutely mad when the military wanted to retire it.

As a former Crew Chief for the A-10....it's far from invincible XD but it is in essence a flying tank. Also the cannon is every so slightly off center actually.

Small detail you missed: It was named in to honour the P-47 thunderbolt, so it was actually called the thunderbolt II

If you’re solider pinned down by enemy fire, A-10 is like an angel that comes from the sky:)

Slight correction:

While the 'live" barrel is in the centre line, the GAU 8 is actually offset from the midline.

The P-47 Thunderbolt was the original Thunderbolt, which was often nicknamed the "Jug", because of the appearance and because of the survivability. The Thunderbolt was usually used to bomb things, as it could fit three big bombs on it, and even free-fire rockets. Due to this, when the A-10 came around, and was made into a powerful, tough attacker, it was named the Thunderbolt II, to commemorate the original CAS plane of the USM.

During the cold war, I had the honor of calling in a close air support strike by an A-10. During a training exercise. It was very impressive. Will never forget the sound of it coming in and firing it's gun.

I grew up near an Air Force base where the A-10 was housed and deployed from. There is a test range approx 40 minutes from there. I could hear them shooting that cannon from there.

Jesus, have you guys ever seen a picture of the A-10? Because if you saw it you would immediately see that the gatling-gun is off-center. It is so to balance recoil.

I had the pleasure of seeing the A-10 when I was deployed. I occasionally see them parked when I drive by the flightline where I'm currently stationed. The Thunderbolt II is beautiful in its simplicity, ruggedness, and lethality.

For infantry support. Most certainly.

However I recommend watching a certain Laser pig, A10 review.

The gun on the A-10 is god awful at taking out tanks, so they usually launch AGM-65 Mavericks to do the job. Mavericks, mind you, can also be equipped to the F-16, F/A-18, and even the F-4, and A-7.
