One thing to consider is that I've found that driving somewhere always takes me longer than I think it will. You'll hit long patches of road construction where everyone slows to 45 mph, you'll be stuck behind a lot of semis, you'll have to wait in line for a half hour to get your lunch at a Roy Rogers at a Pennsylvania turnpike service plaza because there are 50 people in line ahead of you when it is a busy summer weekend, etc.

Side note: Depends on how far you are driving, how much you value your car, etc., it may be better to rent a car for the road trip instead of driving your own. The rental cost may be more desirable than taking thousands of miles of depreciation on your car.

As a frequent business traveller, I think this is spot on. There is not so much of a cutoff as there is a point where you start to consider flying. For me that is about 6 hours. And by 8 hours, I will almost certainly fly. Though total flight time for what would be an 8 hour drive can vary widely. If the final destination 2 hours from the nearest airport, that can really add to the total time. On the other hand, if I need to be at an office by noon, I can get up at 4 am to catch an raly flight but if I had to drive, it would be more dangerous driving on limited sleep. One more factor is availability of direct flights. A layover tends to add a minimum of 2 hours to the total travel time.

Parking at your destination could be a factor as well. Some folks drive here and then get sticker shock when they realize they can't park downtown for free. Or they pick a hotel with free parking that's in a much less convenient location in the burbs. If you fly you don't have to worry about what to do with your car.

I like that you mention the "stops" that can be done with the driving factor...I do this at least once a year with a road trip to a car show in Pennsylvania (I live in Texas). So there are lots of opportunities during that 10-12 day trip to visit with friends/family and places. This year I did another road trip to Maine and took a "new to me" route back. You get to enjoy/see different areas this way too. Just remember, if your car/truck isn't in good shape....don't take it on a 5000 mile trip. haha.

Hey professor Wolters, Tyler has skipped your marketing class to feature in Stephen Graham Show youtube channel but at least he gave you a shoutout for your channel so I guess it was worth it? Anyways, he deserves extra credits hehe

When we do Disney its about 8 hours but we always drive. We generally stop in one of the GA coastal islands for a meal and some site seeing or in the St Augustine area. That was we get more that one destination out our trip.

Midwest struggles... Often find the best value (taking into account time and price) by driving either 7 hours to Denver or 8 to Chicago to fly to Europe!! Our cut off for domestic travel is around 10 to 12 hours and we're driving. Great tips as usual!
