What do you look for in a survival or tactical magazine? American Survival Guide and Off Grid Magazines are two magazines I've been looking through recently. They talk about a variety of topics and cover a lot of different gear. What do you think about them? Would you recommend either or both of them? Why or why not? Comment below and share your ideas.

I agree with your other reviewers about the gear.  No way to get around it because it's the advertisers who pay for the magazines overhead.  The advertisers want readers with the deep pockets to buy gear instead of education and training.  Guys like Cody Lundin with his 13 dollar knife and garbage bags doesn't sell product.

I read American Survival Guide Magazine! I love this mag! It has a plethora of off- grid SHTF survival information! It's like gettin schooled on what you need to know to survive various situations, cuz trust me, in this day of age, the signs of times are among us people; yall need to get aware and start learning and doing by practicing, it WILL change you! Thanks for posting! 👍

I bought both issues. Great quality paper stock, generally good articles, high quality photos...gear reviews are good..though the gear is to pricey...not very "common man".

I don't know Off The Grid but I picked up American Survival Guide. I was disappointed. It had good topics that it only glossed over with no real details nor resources on where to find out more about the topic. It had lots of "main stream" survival product adds and seem to recommend getting the most expensive items on the market with no comparisons. The magazine seemed small to me but that might be the trend now.
What I Like To See:
Comparison between survival products; main stream vs. other brand.
Survival Channels reviews: both on TV and on YouTube. Who gives the best rounded information.
More DIY projects.
Details: why this product, what sets it different then the other guy?
Mix it up: Urban, Woodland, Disaster Survival.
Quick Tips: tricks on keeping your gear in working order, organization, food storage tips.
V.O.B. TIPS: Getting your car ready for survival.

This would be a start.

*I could of swore the picture on the  "Off Grid" magazine was of my dad. He's got his boat decked out and read to go from his hidden boat house. Even looks eerily like the city we're near. LOL*

Saw ASG in the grocery store over the weekend.  Considered buying it, but opted out.  Maybe I will give it a second look.

I used to be buy American Survival Guide regularly for a couple of years until it just disappeared from stores shelves. It's different now ( I have only seen one or two issues) because of the "prepper" movement. Before it focused on emergency preparedness and homesteading and less on firearms and combat. I have one issue of Off Grid and I liked it a lot. My main issue with any survival or prepper books, websites, magazines... is the sometimes quick and shallow coverage or overview of certain subjects. I hate simplistic articles that try to cover too much like a two page article on "choosing dogs for survival" or how to fight off a mugger. And I also get turned off by marketing expensive gear. People who make that stuff forget that there are other supplies and gear people need. I don't need to dress like a futuristic commando or carry "cool name brand" gadgets to impress the other post apocalyptic survivors. :)

I like both of them. good information in both. But you have to take the good with the bad. Off grid like recoil is more about selling stuff. I like backwoodsmen the best. It teaches you a lot about DIY.

Dido, The quality of the mag is great, articles should be fewer and deeper each month.  Gear review should be objective and varied.  Good Luck.  Thanks for the discussion points.

I've read OffGrid since it started and I think they do a fine job of getting info out there. As far as catering to the higher end product, I don't see it. In the most recent issue, they do a short piece on pen sized lights. They give a short review of 8 of them ranging from a $17 Maglite to a $90 streamlight. Considering they are still in their infancy(only four issues) I think they've done fine do far

I agree with other commenters about Off Grid and Recoil. Lots of expensive gear and light on techniques and skills. I knew Recoil was in the tank for advertisers when I read their glowing preview of the stinking turd that is the Remington R51. I'm looking for survival/tactical skill set instruction and after that, the gear needed to facilitate it. Show me a magazine article about the typical survival uses for something like the Morakniv Light My Fire knife for $30, how to care for and sharpen it, etc. Which is exactly the reason that I ditched magazines in favor of blogs and channels like yours, Tim!

I didn't know ASG was still around? I got most of my old issues from years back. And got Mother Earth News from back in the 70's. (for what it's worth) lol

The Internet is so rich with resources that are free and instant. The magazines themselves are expensive. If I'm at a book store I will thumb through them but YouTube and other blogs offer much better information and free.

Is ASG back in print? Was a subscriber many years ago until they went digital.

Brother I wish you would pass on to them the survival guide magazine and survivors edge also . That if there subscription was 25.00 for 12 issues . I would have signed up a while back but pushing 40 dollars is to much . It would work out better for them . Because I am sure there are hold outs like me that just can't pay 36 to 40 dollars for subscription . .Or if they would let you split the payments into 2 it wouldn't seem so bad phycology talking there . I like the survivor one the 2, I mentioned . I read them almost every month when I go to the pharmacy to pick up scrips for my wife .I have not ran across off grid as of yet .

Off Grid has great info but really tries to push the most expensive things they can find. The info is very helpful for all but the gear isn't for your average Joe on a budget
