Actually it was just because they kept stealing my pizza. I had a post it note with my name on it stuck to the box and those assholes stole it anyway. I caught them wolfing it down in a broom closet.

I always felt that they were just to make sure Vader didn't kill the Emperor and to convince the Galaxy that Palpatine was just a decrepit old man.

It makes sense that Vader wouldn't like the Emperor's guard for these reasons. I would also add that Vader probably didn't like them for another reason: they would directly stand in his way if he ever confronted Palpatine in a direct assassination attempt.

Considering how the Royal Guards only wield melee weapons, it seems to me like their primary purpose is to provide the Emperor protection _against_ Vader. I mean, if they're merely supposed to defend Palpatine against standard threats, an elite platoon of Stormtroopers would be sufficient.

If Disney felt like making a more mature SW movie, Crimson Empire would be a great source. Great insight into the Red Guard, Rogue One levels of dubious rebel behaviour, and it would canonise more interesting material into the post-Empire period.

I watched a deleted scene where Darth Vader was blocked from seeing the Emporer and it was a guy in green and the Red Guard Vader started choking the guy the Imperial officer until he basically told him it was the Emporer' s orders the Red Guard where about to jump Vader only scene I ever saw those guards move fast.
