Don't Make This MISTAKE When Hatching Eggs!

We recently got 18 specialty silkie hatching eggs but only 3 hatched, but why? Well we forgot this crucial step when it comes to getting fertile hatching eggs in the mail, we forgot to let them rest for 6-12 hours before placing them in the incubator.
-------
We ordered 18 fertile silkie eggs a few weeks ago and only 3 of the silkie eggs hatched, and we think this is why. It has been a while since we actually bought mail ordered hatching eggs from a breeder, and we totally forgot this step when it comes to incubating eggs, and that is letting the hatching eggs rest for six to twelve hours before putting them in your incubator. You do this because the hatching eggs get shook around from being mailed and they just need to rest before and settle before going in your forced air incubator or still air incubator. And we are pretty sure us forgetting this crucial step is the main reason our silkie eggs did not hatch. Most of the time, it is not the chicken breeders fault, the eggs are more than likely fertile or most of the eggs are, but the probable reason is the fact the hatching eggs did rest and settle prior to incubation. So toady we got another batch of special silkie eggs, which silkies are our favorite chicken breed, and these fertile hatching eggs came from a chicken farm called Alabama Silkies. They will be show quality chickens and this time we did let the eggs actually rest for eight hours before placing the egg sin the RCom 50 incubator. Another tip for hatching chicken eggs is to use distilled water in your incubator, and also try not to mix other eggs with your new mail ordered hatching eggs you just bought. Remember that your incubator temperature needs to be set at 99.5 degrees and that the incubators humidity needs to be set at 60 percent, and be sure to use an automatic egg turner or if you have a small incubator or homemade incubator, you need to hand turn the hatching eggs several times a day. Also chicken eggs, no matter the breed of chicken, will take up to 21 days for the chicks to hatch, and we usually put the eggs on lock down on day 19, which means we do not open the incubator at this point and turn the incubator's temp down to 99.1, but not all incubators have the ability to get that specific, but do not fret. Most of the time, you an your new hatching eggs will be just fine and hatch with no issues. But since these are are special or rare eggs because of the show quality of the breed of the chicken, we are being as specific as we can with these heritage breeds chickens. If you do not know, the silkie is one of the oldest breeds of chickens from Asia and there are even documentations from the travels of Marco Polo.

I gotta tell you though I worked for post office 25 years and have delivered a lot of things but when I delivered anything fragile or live chicks or ducks I always treated them as precious as if they were a newborn baby

Of all the families I watch here and all the children, I believe that you and your precious daughter are so nice to watch together. The three of you just seem so happy together building your Family farm.

Love the update in the goats. We bought 3 baby Nigerian dwarf goats goats 6 months ago and bottle fed them (thanks to yalls videos) and now they’re just the sweetest girls. -named them Rose, Blair, and Dorthy after the golden girls 🤣. Love yalls family and homestead. Very inspiring ❤️ btw I think ‘Bootsie’ is having triplets!

The humidity might be the problem. I had the same thing happen to me too. So we tried dry incubation. Were you don't put water in the incubator until lockdown. We had ours at 40- 45% humidity until it was time for lockdown. But I don't know anything about hatching out silkies 😕

The indoor rest period is to let air cells begin to recover and temp/humidity acclimate to Incubation room conditions 6-12 hrs may be enuf for farm fresh eggs - but its 12-24 for Shipped eggs!! Also - no turning for Shipped eggs the first few days in incubator.
