It's amazing they can even have this conversation at all. I know it hurts, but hearts mend. One is going to figure out what he wants eventually, and the other is going to find someone who already knows what he wants. When I was a teenager, it would have been not only inconceivable, but also illegal to have this conversation in my country in the first place, so I would have risked getting arrested and thrown into jail or a reform school. Later on, it stopped being illegal, but that doesn't mean people would suddenly have accepted two gays touching each other in public and having a romantic date: I would have been spat at, sworn at, beaten up. Then in my late 20s I moved to the UK and found my liberation: when I moved here, gay marriages were just about to become legal. But I was awfully insecure and too old for the guys I fancied, not to mention a bit weird because of my history of suppressed feelings. Eventually it got better, but I can't help feeling that I wasted the most beautiful years of my life. Sure, I achieved other things, but my native country let me down. Now it's way better even there, things have changed significantly. Hopefully, the next generation of kids will not have to go through this unnecessary trauma.
