As a herpetologist ( for those who don’t know it’s someone who studies reptiles and amphibians as a career)

Know this beaded lizards and gila monsters are not aggressive lizards in fact they are actually pretty shy and easily scared animals.

As long as your not going out of your way to pick up one of these animals without the proper protection or training you will never get bitten,

and if you are bitten don’t be fooled it will be a experience you won’t forget anytime soon lol, it feels like lava moving through your veins, but it’s unlikely to seriously make you ill, in fact most deaths are related to people who don’t receive treatment and people who have a allergic reaction to the venom.

As far as Nile monitors and green iguanas go if properly cared for they are fairly calm and easy going animals, but this being said their wild counterparts can be very defensive and a lizard that size can most defiantly not kill you but rock your world. A large mile monitor or a defensive full sized male iguana can send you packing to the ER for stitches easy.

And for those of you thinking about a monitor, iguana, any other larger lizard as a pet I urge you to not pull the trigger on that unless you have years of not only experience as a reptile keeper, but years of study of that species as well as reptile behavior. Not to mention these animals can cost thousands of dollars to provide them a proper and comfortable naturalistic home. Needless to say their are hundreds of smaller species of reptile and amphibians much easier to keep with even advanced level care and just as rewarding as keeping larger animals.

To address Komodo dragons. These are not to be played with by anyone who doesn’t have years of professional level experience working around these animals. They are of the same possible threat classification as crocodiles, alligators, bears, wild dogs, and larger big cats for a reason.

There are instances of Komodo dragons under human care at large non profit zoos and rescues who grow insanely curious and even mildly friendly towards staff.

I have worked with a Komodo like that a larger older male. He was a extremely calm animal, very easy to work with, and never minded a pat on the back or the head.

That being said Komodo dragons are seriously dangerous and even my old man I worked with would go into a absolutely defensive and food aggressive state when presented with larger food items.

One time he even knocked me on the ground with his tail when I scared him out of sleeping, Komodo dragons tail whip like iguana, but their tail is like getting hit with a semi flexible lead pipe.

My leg was bruised badly for three weeks.

I have kept Iguanas for twenty years and this video is ridiculous. A green Iguana can give a good bite and can scratch, but they aren't going to kill anyone. They are not poison and rarely attack unless provoked. In all the years I have kept them, I have been bit three times and never needed stitches

There are actually three venomous lizards. The Girls Monster, Mexican Beaded Lizard and the Komodo Dragon.

2:20 poisonous? Venomous would be more appropriate, I think.

As an owner of several monitor lizards (a Nile monitor being among them) a green iguana and many many other reptiles, they really did the Nile monitor dirty in this video. My younger cousins visit my Nile monitor’s room frequently (supervised) and as long as you don’t go out of your way to provoke them, they won’t hunt you down lol. The only time my Nile gets violent is when she has to go to the vet for a wellness exam. My green iguana is also only violent when I startle her or try to interrupt her feedings.

This being said, I’d only recommend large lizards to serious reptile keepers who have a ton of time, money, and space to throw away at them. My large lizards alone (Nile monitor, Asian water monitor, savannah monitor, green iguana, tegu) cost close to $30-40k a year on feeding, lighting, heating, water, enrichment and vet bills (my other reptiles and pets cause this amount to triple). A bite from a big lizard can be incredibly serious and cleaning up after them is not fun to say the least but if you are willing to give them the resources or enjoy them from a far, you’ll see they aren’t that bad
