Overnight on the World's Deadliest Island

This island kills you if you breathe...

Gruinard Island aka Anthrax Island is in the North West of Scotland and was contaminated in Anthrax when it was used as a testing site for biological weapons.

The island was recently set on fire (a method used many times to clean Gruinard island from Anthrax) which has raised the question on whether this was another deliberate attempt to clean the island after saying it was supposedly cleaned.

The fire happened at a very strange time. I uploaded a video about this island years ago and when that video went viral, it brought a lot of attention to the location and the history of the island, and quite importantly, it showed that it was still possible to land on Anthrax island.

Since then I have been wondering did my video have something to do with this fire... Let's find out.

In 1981 I was 14.My dad was fishing off Cove Bay on his pal, Sandy's boat, Unicorn. I spent the summer with him in a caravan (and I must admit, it was exciting but boring!). One day, we moored off Gruniard Island and I was aboard Unicorn while dad dived off Gruniard. Some time later, he surfaced & climbed aboard Unicorn and I noted my normally laid back dad was rather perplexed. Turned out he'd been swimming a fair bit below (I honestly don't recall the depth, but I think it was around 50/60feet) and it had got darker & darker (I would like to admit this was was from memory, but I have NO need to embellish or tell lies about my wonderful father) and it had got darker by degrees. As it happened, he told me emphatically, he discovered he had swum into an undersea tunnel made of brickwork!! He had used his (home made) dive lamp and while he had swum several dozens of feet, all he could see was brickwork.... Upon reflection, he had expressed a wish to have gone further as he was convinced it was actually a submarine tunnel. After all, it turned out Gruniard Bay was where the Russian fleet had set off from in the 1940's.... Not to mention, RN ships were STILL moored near Loch Ewe (and google nato exercises near the island So my dad was convinced it was actually a Naval Base where subs sneaked out/in to engage the Nazi Wolf Packs during the war. Actually, Cove Bay had a couple of gun emplacements during WW2 (which are still obvious and the story where the locals tipped the guns into the sea when the war ended are still a known secret). But there is a beautiful small monument to those brave Russian sailors at that now silent emplacement in testament to the bravery of the Russian seamen of those convoys. That was 43 years ago, but I can still see that caravan, the wonderful sand and rock pools of Cove and even when I discovered the hidden cave where the locals had held their prayers so long ago. It feels like yesterday, but all I have is my memory because I lost my dad at a really young age and I would give pretty much anything to have him here & now to back me up in my recollection.... But, why WOULDN'T they have a submarine base there and want to have kept it secret??? What submarine tunnels???? 😯
