How Do I Get a Band 9 in IELTS Writing Task 2?

5 Steps to a Band 7 in IELTS Writing Task 2

1. Understand the question.

You must understand the question before you attempt to answer it. This way, you’ll know exactly what the examiner is looking for. One of the biggest mistakes students make is not answering the question fully, which stops them from getting a score higher than a Band 5.

To analyse the question, you must first identify the question type, then identify the keywords in the question and finally identify the instructions words. This will help you understand exactly what the examiner wants you to do with the question.

2. Plan your answer.

The students who get the highest marks in Writing Task 2 always plan their answers for up to 10 minutes. Planning helps you organise your ideas and structure your essay before you write it, saving you time and helping you produce a clear and coherent essay.

3. Write an introduction.

The introduction should tell the examiner the rest of the essay and answer the question directly. This tells the examiner that you know what you are doing straight away and helps you write your main body paragraphs.

4. Write the main body paragraphs.

This is where you give the examiner more detail. You do this by stating your main points and supporting these with explanations and relevant examples.

5. Write a conclusion.

In your conclusion, you should summarise what you already said in the rest of your essay.

Hi... I'd like to say thank you. Did my IELTS on July 22nd in Irvine. I must say, I didn't take it seriously since English is my second language in the Philippines. But then, as the day of the examination came closer, I became anxious. I know people attend reviews for this, and so I got curious. To my surprise upon viewing the sample exams on the site, I became more anxious. And didn't know where to start. And so, I made sure to allot 3 hours of my free-time listening to your videos and taking sample tests on YT for reading and listening with just 1 week left. And your videos provided the most insightful tips amongst all tutorials I've searched. And so I took the exam with all the hints that I got from you. In the end, my score wasn't bad. Got an average of 7.5, with listening:8.5, speaking: 8, Reading:7.5 and writing:7. I still don't know why i only got 7 in writing, but Somehow, i blame it to my penmanship, which I believe is unreadable 😅 I haven't practiced on writing legibly, worse, being a doctor made me neglect it even more. If ever I'd be retaking it, I'd still go back to your channel. Please keep on helping people. More power!
