How to Turn Anxiety Into Excitement

Trying to calm down during a bout of anxiety is likely futile. Instead, try saying: “I am excited.” Because anxiety and excitement are both arousal emotions and have similar symptoms, it’s easier to get from one to the other than to completely shift gears into calmness. In this short video, staff writer Olga Khazan explores this theory with Alison Wood Brooks, a professor at Harvard Business School who has researched this phenomenon, and tests it out for herself at karaoke.

This also seems true philosophically. The reason that something (an upportunity) provokes anxiety is because you care about it.

I had not heard of this before but it makes sense. We are only anxious and excited when we really care.

I just want to thank you guys I went into a google search looking to find little to no answer. I just want to say as soon as you said saying 3 words “I am excited” I felt so much better about myself I kinda broke down in tears of joy. I owe you guys so much. Thank you for this video. I didn’t think a video could change me so much

It works, before a horseback riding show, I get nervous and nauseous and I feel like vomiting. Then I remember how fun showing is, and when I get into my show clothes, I start feeling excited. I find it pretty easy to switch from anixiety to excitement and back to anxiety. I'm sure it will help out with speeches too.

"Im excited!" also I'm going to drink a pint. (not sure how many "i'm excited" beers were consumed before hand?)

This was filmed at RECESSIONS in DC. I haven't been there in 8 years but so glad to see it still exists.

This is tantra. Buddhism has been recommending this approach for over a thousand years. Emotion is nothing more than a feeling/energy in your body interacting with your narrative of the current situation based on your past conditioning. Different narrative, different emotion.

I would be interested to see how they would have gone having not known that they were being filmed, nor having been drinking.

If you say "I'm SUPER excited" you will sing 28% better.

Yes embrace the nervousness! It is the spice in the meal called life.

I’ll need to try this. Even after years of top shelf therapy, I’m open to learning. One thing’s for sure, excitement can at times produce anxiety.

Great idea and so much better than the calm down approach - lets toughen up a bit and enjoy life

this video really seems to conflate anxiety with nervousness. Everyone gets nervous before giving a speech or singing karaoke. Anxiety is a more debilitating and generalized experience that simply saying "I'm excited" isn't going to fix.

Not much to be nervous about when the bar only has 2 patrons.

Just in case you were wondering, and judging by the lyrics on the screen (2:16), the song was Don't Stop Believing by Journey.
